stripped bolt housing

hello all, whilst putting the oil filter cover back on my 2010 tenere i've over tightened the bleed screw and stripped the thread of the housing, now there is a slight oil leak as i can't get the correct torque on the bleed screw. has anyone got any ideas how i can fix this please?

You have a couple of options;

1) replace the cover -> http://www.cmsnl.com/search/partnumb...spbpmodelcode=

Or,

2) re-tap the hole -> http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/se...ategory/page/1

I can't remember the size, but if you are buying a repair kit, it's probably going to cost you more than a new cover !

<edit>

Or - you could get a 2nd hand cover, it's the same part for the XT600 & Xt660 motors

Unhappy

its not the cover that's the problem, the bolt screws into the engine block, as far as i can tell

There are 4 bolts, three that fix the cover to the engine case, and one on the top that is the bleed screw.

Three run in horizontal, one vertical - is it one of the three, or the vertical one on the top of the cover ?

The red arrow shows the bleed screw:

Or, do you mean the three mounting bolts ?

You may use Teflontape on the bad tread, until you get a replacement.

The screw/bolt in question is the bottom of the 3 mounting bolts that is also the drain bolt, the bolt is fine but the thread it screws into is the one that's stripped. does anyone know if i could use a longer bolt if there is more thread than normally used in the housing? hope that makes sense

I did the same thing on another thread and stuck a slightly longer bolt in and everything was okay. Then after a while got it tapped for ten or something quid. But didn't need to.

That kind of thing can happen to us all.

As an aside a tip I was told,for next time,is when the bolt is nipped up firm,just tighten it one eighth of a turn more and that will be enough.

You can buy seal kit, clean the hole, and put some inside. It will seal the thread even if its not completely tightened.
That worked on my Suzuki RM on the bottom screw for draining the oil.

That happened to my TTR 250 (exactly the same setup) and I took the clutch cover off and had a helicoil inserted. 50K later it's still good.

The trouble with tapes and thread sealants etc is that they can dislodge from the offending thread and get pumped throught the oil system. Might be bad - I don't really know, but it seems logical.
