Was a pita to install, not because of the shock itself, that part was easy. But some seriously sadistic Yamaha engineer routed the Y-piece of the exhaust right next to the top bolt of the shock. There was no way I could get the bolt out far enough without getting the exhaust out of the way. Which means tank plastics, heat shields, my Givi top plate, passenger grips, number plate holder, exhaust cover and then the exhaust itself... Nothing too difficult, but a lot of work to get at one simple bolt. The hardest part -as usual- was refitting the rear wheel. Seriously, is anyone able to do it on there own? The spacers, the brake, the wheel and the axle. I always need an extra pair of hands to get it in without the spacers falling out again.:102:

I had this problem many times, wasted lots of time to fit it back again.
Now for me its the best to do this:
- position the bike vertical when disasembling, not on the side stand etc...
- back wheel positioned just 2 centimeters from the ground, so you dont need to lift the wheel much, when putting together, and the spacers dont get stuck somewhere
- zip tied sprocket on the spokes (to prevent falling apart and squeeze it together as much as it gets, to have maximum space for spacers
- grease bearing seals, so the spacers stick together and dont fall out

If I do this, than putting it all back is a peace of cake and takes me 3 minutes to get the axle in.

I'll try that next time ;)

so did that today and it was a lot less work than the rear shock.
A couple of static tests have me doubting the dampening a bit. But I just used the standard 150mm air chamber, might need to play with that a bit. I'll probably know more after a test ride next weekend.

Until yesterday i'd forgotten how fiddly these things are.

My technique is to get everything on the caliper side on first. (spacer out on the sprocket side). Get the caliper in the locator slot. Then tilt the wheel a little \ like that and you can get the sprocket side spacer in.

I did it by myself yesterday but i have to admit, it took me 5 mins more than i expected.

Interesting mate... elaborate on why ? I can't say i noticed a difference... Did you install with or without Kev spacers ?

I can't believe you did not feel the difference, it totally change the front end feel of my XTX.

I wish I had done the mod years ago. The front end has far less dive under braking, the front end provides better feed back under load in hard fast corners. I run the springs with this setup, front fork tubes lowered 30mm, rear end lowered 25mm using XTR links & one notch harder on the rear spring. I am converted & will never go back to standard XTX springs, now want to do the rear spring.

Sorry mate, feel has never been one of my strong points :)

Not going all out and getting a new shock then ?

Could be even better Kev ?

Kev 24-01-11 11:15

Most of the springs come out of 3 factory's & are renamed for different brands.

I only want progressive springs on my XTX. Looking for a cheap rear if you have one.

Paul Curtis 24-01-11 19:17

Have just ordered a hyperpro rear spring in black and will be fitting it at the end of Feb (hopefully Kev will have one by then and made a fitting guide to make things a bit easier) :YellowWink_VZHUX5:

dazzerrtw 24-01-11 19:44

over the winter month's I have been Getting the bike ready for our trip to Morocco and I wanted to fit a better engine guard than my Tenere came with.
Having had a look what was on offer I went for the Adventure Spec one.
This seem's to be the strongest on the market.
When it was fitted to the bike I tought that they just may be a slight chance that a stone could still get between the gap on each side of the alloy guard.
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...w/Image051.jpg
So Craig and I thought it best to Fill the gap's in just to make sure that there was total protection to the bottom of the engine.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...w/DSCF0943.jpg

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...w/DSCF0945.jpg

Standerd the Yamaha Tenere come's with a none flick back rear brake lever.
We have seen a few of these catch when off roading and bend right back ,and they can not so easily be bent back in to shape.
So I cut the end off my brake lever and welded on one off a XR400.

http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s...w/DSCF0950.jpg
Also fitted a scott oiler and a set of wide foot peg's from Ebay, I Now have to have a stronger spring fitted to the rear shock and were ready.

OK, finally gotten around to taking it for a spin and testing how the Wilbers 641 performed. Mostly motorways this morning, so that did not tell me a lot. Felt stable and planted at high speeds, but so did the OEM shock on those kind of roads.
So took the back roads to ride home this evening. Bad quality roads and plenty of speed bumps, so ideal for a short test. A truly peachy experience on the potholed roads. The speedbumps were even better, so I decided to see where the limits were and approached a couple of the bumps rather aggressively. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The rear wheel kept the road very well. Only the landing after jump from the last speed bump made me consider adjusting the rebound dampening slightly. (BRS had already set it up based on my requirements as best they could without actually installing it on the bike)

Not sure what to make of the front yet. It does feel better on the road than I expected from my static tests. The feedback from the front is massively better than with the OE springs. Still a noticeable dive, but that is to be expected on this kind of bike. And I fear that reducing the air chamber or using thicker oil might compromise the improved feedback. :102:

Going for some green-laning Sunday, let's see how it performs in the mud and gravel...

Kev 12-02-11 12:27

Carried out the 10000K KMS (6000 miles) service on my XTX. Also pulled the forks out to change my fork oil to 15W, I was quite surprised how dirty the fork oil was.

You sure are right it's a 07 ZRX1200, it has never seen a rain drop in it's life & is cleaner than when it came off the show room floor.

It was also has a few mods, K&N filter with air box mod, rejetted carbs to suit, WerX can, almost slick tyres & just fitted yesterday Hell front & rear brake lines. Next months mods are going to be progressive fork springs.

Here is a photo just before the WerX can & slick tyres were fitted, not bad looking for a 4 year old bike.

Kev 12-02-11 23:08

Nice work J_maker, I glad your bike is running smoother with all the new mods.

I want one... that is all.

ok, so both the ten and I survived to tell you how the suspension held up. It had been raining earlier this week, so the clay here in Brabant was extra deep and slippery. On the toughest sections it clearly was not the suspension that was the limiting factor. Nor was the bike (well, maybe the bike's weight had a little to do with it, but it was not the biggest factor) :bricks:

On the faster stretches (gravel with loads of potholes), the Wilbers performed admirably. The bike really floated over the bumps but remained perfectly controllable...

I did manage to take a couple of pics before it got all clogged with mud though:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...n/_MG_5269.jpg

The external oil cartridge fits nicely above the pillion pegs and allows for setting high and low speed compression dampening:

Tony660x 18-02-11 22:50

I removed my fuelling mod and added a Power Commander III and set the fuel map up. Should make it run nice and smooth.

Paul Curtis 03-03-11 21:50

Fitted a Hyperpro rear spring

Kev 03-03-11 22:31

And the results? is the rear spring worth doing on the XTX?

Paul Curtis 04-03-11 08:33

I have only been for a short ride on bike after fitting the spring as it was quite late so no results as yet will try to get out over the weekend
was not as bad to fit as i thought only took about 1 hr to do as all the bolts can be accessed without removing the stage 3 filter

Steve T 05-03-11 00:20

Bought it yesterday afternoon in Birmingham then rode it 444 miles home . . . .

Bike looks great apart from that high fender, as you are removing it you are excused! Enjoy it mate.

Ni3ous 06-03-11 11:52

Did some prototyping with my new custom made alu bash plate, and fixing mounting points for my new alu panniers.

Well its too cold here to ride so I had to find something...

J_maker 06-03-11 14:06

well??? any pictures mate??? :walk1:

Paul Curtis 06-03-11 19:44

Just been for a good ride to try out the rear spring and i like it i think the bike rides better over the bumpier roads and corners better but i also think it has lowered the rear end a bit 10-15 mm

pawlos 06-03-11 19:45

Last week putted MTC cans, power commander III, DNA 1 and 2, KEV O2 eliminator and fork spacers. Finnaly my bike stops to boring me and makes me smile again:icon_thumright:
