Fitted two Kev mods today
I purchased the tail riser and the fork spacers and decided to fit them today as it has pi++++ down with rain here all day.
I started with the riser which I found to be an absolute doddle, as per Kev's instructions. I did place my small trolley jack under the skid plate and after removing the nuts from the two bolts I jacked the rear half of the bike slowly pulling on the bolts at the same time, once the jack was in the right position, the bolts came out with no effort at all. This in turn kept the bike in the exact position to slide in again. Very easy to fit and again kev's photo instructions made the job so much easier. I have read that some of you have had to remove the exhaust, I am running with arrows and there is no need to remove it as there is just enough clearance to remove the top bolt. As this didn't take as long I moved onto the fork spacer mod which I found a little awkward doing this on my todd. I removed everything as per the instructions, took the weight off the front wheel but as first thought the bike was unsteady. I used the jack again but found as I was attempting to push the fork top nut down to get the thread going I was pushing down against the spring not getting anywhere. After half hour of struggling and scratching my head, I decided to hold the fork leg pulling up whilst pushing down with the nut, job done in 10 minutes!!. I have only ridden it in my cul de sac as I ain't officially on the road yet and I have to say the riding postion is awesome. I am 5'11" and on tip toes which I would say is just about borderline. I haven't adjusted anything else yet but will leave the suspension as it is unless anyone thinks otherwise and will adjust the chain, not sure wheather the mod should make it tighter or slacker. Overall I am very pleased and would recommend both the mods providing you can afford to be any higher off the ground, the bike looks better up there too. Thanks Kev, keep up the mods!!!!. Dave |

I feel like I've got a new bike! :toothy5:
Fitted OTR adjustable levers, New Fork protectors & front mudguard, Extra bright blue headlight bulb, Dunlop Sportmax Mutant Front & Back + new tubes, rear brake pads, Iridium Sparkplug, Removed Snorkel, DNA Stage 1 Filter (waiting for stage 2) & PCIII. Still got the Kev fork mods & tail tidy to do and that will mean all the bits I've bought will have made it onto the bike. Then I can start buying some more... |
Is this better or worse ???
I must have done the opposite of everybody else to my new R!
I lowered the rear by 43mm with some bones from Bike Farm De. I put on handlebar risers to accomodate the forks as below. I lowered the forks by 50mm (43 effectively to match the rear). Placed a rack and removeable ,top box on so I can use it to go to work on. Modified the side stand to accomodate (a bodge actually). Put on a medium sized smoked screen. Put on Ascerbis handguards and spiolers. Put in a throttle stop on the carb to limit opening to 1/4. Put on a Yamaha bash plate (very soft ally, should have taken advice from this site - Doh). Put on heated grips for use in the winter. Cut out about 25mm of foam from the seat and recovered it. These mods have lowered the seat height from a measured 875mm to 790mm. I did the lowering mods to get the bike to fit my wife. She is still learning to ride and the throttle will stop her from riding it through a hedge (hopefully) untill she gets used to the size/power of it. This (fortunately) I have made up so I can turn a simple screw by hand and move it out of the way/return it. The bike rides the same as before but the seat is hard especially at the sides and the whole bike feels a bit cramped for me. When she gets used to it I will probably put the foam back. My reasons for selecting the XT660R are more for functionality than sport. CaptMoto, I know you have done a similar thing to your seat - do you have a similar problem ?? |
The seat looks brilliant, when I was reading the post I was filled with horror but the end result looks fine and hopefully low enough for your wife.
Glad to hear the 1/4 throttle stop is easily removable as I would hate to ride a bike to 1/4 throttle, as you say its to aid whilst learning etc. Re the seat hardness, mine is standard thickness and it kills my rear after a while riding, I need to lose weight and start clentching my buttocks! The bike looks really mean in the picture. |
Old git ray
Looks nice the bike and the mods youve done sounds good but it just looks wierd to me as its sitting so low to the ground now. Its good your wife is into the biking and youve both got a bike yous can ride. As for the seat i would watch ebay and you might be able to get a second hand one on the cheap and keep the other for the wife when she wants to ride the bike. I like the sound of the throttle stop for the wife but 1/4 sounds quiet small that must restrict it alot?? Seeing as the XT's engine is quiet happyly revved for the power/speed |
Broke my right footpeg hanger and had to repair it.
