Got a bit of a problem with the Mrs' new lid. We got her a Shoei XR1000 recently, however, on our first ride over 30minutes she complained about two painful spots either side of her noggin towards the top back. I'm guessing it doesn't fit 'perfectly'?

Thing is, she wore it in the store for about 5-10 minutes to see how it would feel, and according to her it was great. It seemed to fit like a glove.

We went back to the store and spoke to the sales rep, he said she probably needs a 'half' size, and that they don't order half sizes into Turkey?!?! Also, that they can't refund or exchange a used lid. I'm pretty pissed off at this, but I'm hoping there's a solution? Does anyone have any tips on how to possibly make it a fraction larger without messing with the safety? I'm thinking along the lines of really stuffing it with clothes, kind of like those things they slip into shoes to stretch them out a little. I tried sticking my head in but it was too big, doh!

Shot in the dark I know, but I really don't want to have to fork out more wedge on a helmet.

You could get your Missus to shave her head, that might be good for about a 1/2 size.

If its at the back of the helmet i dont think replacing the cheek pads would do anything (mum had to get larger ones in her Shoei raid 2 as again half size head problem).

Ive heard of a few people getting a sphere (3D circle) of metal/glass or even the corner of a jam jar etc and rolling it over the top of the area that is effecting you a few times with a bit of force. Its suppose to compress the sponge of the helmet and just quicken the bedding in process of the helmet. Not too sure wheather it worked never needed to do it.

The stuffing the helmet full of cloths sounds like a good idea, but make sure to use clean cloths as im sure the wife wouldnt like a smelly helmet!!

My mate got an Arai off the net and that was too tight when he phoned the shop about it they sent him new cheak pads as they are all that changes the size of the lid! When he put the new pads in it made all the differance that he needed.

If it is tight in just a couple of localised places you can press the area inside the helmet with your thumb to push down the polystyrene.

I did this with mine, it had a tight spot which left a big red mark on my forehead so I pushed it in with my thumbs and it was ok.

I think this is ok just for small areas though, but is maybe worth a try. Good luck.

Some good advice there Mattie, I've also found that even the tightest helmet with time will fit to perfection as it's down to the sponge insterts which like shoes they'll eventually fit into shape.

This (and the other suggestions above) will usually work... a friend of mine who runs the clothing dept. in my (ex local) bike shop said his Shoei rep presented him with a 'special tool' for just such a job - turned out to be a wallpaper edge roller! (1" wide) - which is perfect for squishing the polystyrene helmet lining edges where there is localised pressure...

Had same issue with my helmet but pressure was on my forehead. Taking the helmit off after a ride was usually a joke, have a red dot on my forehead, all the traffic in the area came to standstill looking like robot.

quick fix is to take material lining out, heat up a teaspoon with a zippo and tool the polystyrene back a bit. Worked like a bomb!!!.

I get that sometimes. But I usually take it as a friendly reminder that my hair is getting too long at the back and needs cutting! (I kid you not)
