This (and the other suggestions above) will usually work... a friend of mine who runs the clothing dept. in my (ex local) bike shop said his Shoei rep presented him with a 'special tool' for just such a job - turned out to be a wallpaper edge roller! (1" wide) - which is perfect for squishing the polystyrene helmet lining edges where there is localised pressure...
