Box or bag?

I have a large givi top box and a pair of small panniers but I'm not sure what the best option is. I favour the security of the cases but prefer the versility of the bag.
I will have a tent, sleeping bag and roll mat/ air bed to attach to the bike also and think it'll be easier to attach it to the rear carrier if there's just a bag there.

I have plenty of time to ponder as I don't plan to go any distance until next May!

Having tried all the combos over the years, this year I used my hard panniers with an ortlieb roll bag...by far the best so far for me. Givi boxes etc are ok, but they're awkward to carry and make the bike a bit to heavy. The lock broke with the key in which caused a few headaches at the time. With the bag, you can put loads of clothes in then squash the air out, which you can't do in a box. My two penneth for what it's worth.

I have similar experiences. My prefered option is a pair of hard cases and a LOMO dry holdall on top. This seems to give the best balance between security and flexibility. The only advantage of a top case, over hard panniers is you can store a lid in it.

I also found that a top case made the bike a bit wobbly at speed, particularly when windy. Panniers don't seem to affect handling at all either loaded or unloaded.

My top box is always on my bike so I may be used to the buffeting you mention.
I have a large waterproof bag by overboard that I've used in another role. I may dig that out and have a measure up

After using hard panniers, hard and soft top boxes and a roll bag on various trips, I agree with Richlybow and Pleiades on using those smallish hard panniers and strap the soft luggage onto the rear carrier and maybe part of the back seat. This seems to give the best option for touring where bad roads will be encountered.
