I will have a tent, sleeping bag and roll mat/ air bed to attach to the bike also and think it'll be easier to attach it to the rear carrier if there's just a bag there.
I have plenty of time to ponder as I don't plan to go any distance until next May!

Having tried all the combos over the years, this year I used my hard panniers
with an ortlieb roll bag...by far the best so far for me. Givi boxes etc are ok, but they're awkward to carry and make the bike a bit to heavy. The lock broke with the key in which caused a few headaches at the time. With the bag, you can put loads of clothes in then squash the air out, which you can't do in a box. My two penneth for what it's worth.
