I will have a tent, sleeping bag and roll mat/ air bed to attach to the bike also and think it'll be easier to attach it to the rear carrier if there's just a bag there.
I have plenty of time to ponder as I don't plan to go any distance until next May!

Having tried all the combos over the years, this year I used my hard panniers
with an or tiles roll bag...by far the best so far for me. Givi boxes etc are ok, but they're awkward to carry and make the bike a bit to heavy. The lock broke with the key in which caused a few headaches at the time. With the bag, you can put loads of clothes in then squash the air out, which you can't do in a box. My two penneth for what it's worth.
