Grabbed a quick ride on an xt660z Tenere today!
**Sorry in advance for replying on an old thread, I've just joined the forum and don't really know what I'm doing**
So I'm 19 in under 2 months and live in the UK which means I have to do my A2 license (been riding a 125 Varadero for 2 years), so I'm gonna be limited to 47 bhp (I believe in Aus you have the LAMS system which is comparable). With the Tenere being 47 bhp and me being 6'2" I was very much interested! Today I finally got a chance to ride one! My local Honda dealer got a used one in recently and I persuaded my dad to take it out for a test ride and let me ride it on private land, well I was not disappointed. This particular bike was black, had a k&n filter with no airbox so I could see the filter (can someone tell me what this means, like stage 1,2,34?), it had twin mtc trioval cans WITH NO BAFFLES IN WHATSOEVER, and had a Kev fuel controller under the seat!! 
I've done enough research to know this should perform better than standard but unfortunately I can't compare the 2 so I'll just have to tell you my experience.. It was f###king noisy as f###!! It was actually way too loud and very antisocial, it was.... Something to behold, but it was genuinely too loud, and as a result of these stupidly open pipes I think this added some vibration all round which the big ol' single doesn't need more of. BUT, I still loved it and enjoyed every moment of it. She pulled really f##king hard too which I wasn't actually expecting, actually spun up the rear wheel in second gear on a tiny bit of gravel which I would never even notice... So that led to a fairly pant****ting moment. The torque and acceleration actually felt on par with the Triumph Tiger 800 xc my dad let me ride on the same bit of land, admittedly I didn't open the Tiger up all the way, but even so the pull felt very similar (I'm sure on the road the tiger would shoot off). Unfortunately I didn't get to ride it on the road so this is all I got, but I've definitely been left with a very good impression, so on the performance side, with these mods, it's certainly very pokey for what it is. On our way back there was a huge long spweeping hill and I couldn't get any more than 50 mph up it on my baby 125, but my dad overtook a car and got it up just over 80 ;D I'm not sure how to spot the 02 sensor eliminator though so I'm not sure if it had one or not, anyone? Where do people usually put them and what do they look like? Anyway, just thought id leave this here for anyone who may be in the same position as me but hasn't ridden one yet, Cheers guys |

Yep - MTC 's are way too loud for me too. The O2 controller is a small black box that plugs in between the sensor and the loam - should be under the tank/behind the radiator on the left hand side. MTC can supply baffles to lessen the racket but it does effect airflow. Glad you like the bike. Vibrations are normal but worse if the bar end weights have been taken off.

I'd be slightly careful, as with those mods I'm sure you're sitting on a bike with just over 47bhp which could invalidate your insurance.
Always declare mods to your insurance, but say it's not for performance, that it's to make the bike run smoother. Most insurance companies will understand that a big single can be sluggish and that you're looking to make that bottom end a bit smoother. However, if you're restricted to 47bhp... It's going to be close.

Hi Scot. Pleased you like the Tenere, they are a great all round bike.
I had an MTC single sided silencer on my Ten and it also was too loud. Despite contacting MTC and going over to the factory they could not quieten it down without stifling the performance. I would even say that the fuel consumption goes down ! I have now put the standard silencer back on. I also have the DNA air filter and Kev mod which in my own opinion are the best performance mods you can do. My engine will pull hard in 2nd , 3rd and fourth gears and still sounds good. Lets put it this way, I've just trashed a brand new Michelin Sahara in 3K miles. If you can get the bike at a deal then go for it and just get the exhaust system off, there are plenty around second hand now. Welcome to the site. Hey even come up to Wales and introduce yourself..........maybe?

"with it" nor
"cool" even if you are over excited.
No. 2 Any after market exhaust without baffles is going to be loud. Also MTC exhausts have BS stamp that is valid only when the baffles are in place, without them, you are riding illegally. hi and welcome to the forum
The xt660 engine is mega torquey and bags of fun, ok your not going to set the land speed record but the way it spins up and makes you smile. put it this way I owned an r for 3 yrs, had a tiger 1050 for about 2 yrs then went back for more xt 660 fun in the form of the z, had it for 2 yrs now and still don't know what to change it with when I'm ready apart from another
