I just took a 5 litre plastic can strapped on the back of the bike. Total range with both the 15 litre main tank and the can was about 275 miles or 440 km. Saves a lot of money and you can chuck the can when you're done. A mate had a 10 litre metal tank which was quite flat and fitted onto his rear rack under his luggage. Made the bike a bit top heavy, but enormous range and handy if you have one of those petrol stoves.

Acerbis
So what happened to the Acerbis tank we were told to expect? My dealer called them this week (end of May 08) and was told they still have no plans for the 660.... :-(
|
Ive lost hope in them ever making a tank. I think your best bet is a 10l diesal can (can carry petrol just coloured black for diesal) for any large trip and you will get a great deal more milage before you need to fill up
|
heavy heavy
Gonna need a way strong rack to carry a 10 litre can- that's about - err I can't work it out.... Cheaper though.

The most clever idea we saw here was that dummy exhaust can which was in fact a fuel tank, but it implied that you had to have a 2 in 1 exhaust system. Still it looked like a great idea to me.
Can't find that thread again but if someone remembers where it was, it would be nice to see it again. |
Ardvark bought that from paul666 (i think) for his planned trip to Syria, which unfortunately fell through.
He should be somewhere in the UK right now.... |
It was in the buy and sell section from what i remember but is probably deleted now. Its was a great idea and looked frantisctic :unibrow:. I just looked like any normal performance can and it just clipped off and you took the end cap off and filled your bike with it.
10L of a petrol isnt that heavy any rack that is produced for the XTR should be able to withstand the strain. I know my rack would it could carry another persons weight im sure (not to sure about the subframe though) |
Acerbis tank
I sent them an email asking if they were still planning to make one. No reply yet. I did say a few people on here would be interested if they did.
I think a litre = 1 Kilo (that's for water, but petrol is close in density) - so 10 litres = 10 kilos! Most racks specifify max 5 kilos, but will take more. Not sure if the bouncing about off road would be a bit too much strain. I have ordered a Touratech 'strong' rack - We'll see.......

My Givi rack/topcase specifies 5kg, but I've carried 3 times that on many occasions. I bet it could easily carry more
|
The 5kg thing is only a safety thing ive loaded my rear rack up with more than 5kg before. The main worry is once you start loading up the rear rack too much then the handling of the bike will start to feel different that is the main reason for most weigh limits.
Sure if you think about it the wiegh of a topbox and 2 panniers is going to have more effect on the rear rack/sub frame than just an overloaded rear rack |
