This is all a worry. Just done the first one hundred miles on my 09 Tenere. Do you reckon its worth checking for issues now and is this a general Tenere problem?

I am off to North Wales from Guernsey (with a boat trip obviously) and the round trip will nbe some 800 miles and I would rather not encounter 'off island' issues whilst travelling.

Cheers all.

Just this Saturday the orange light on my Ten (3 months old, 4,500 miles)came on after a few miles, it then refused to start up again. It sounds very much like the reg/rectifier fault.

It's in with the Yam dealer in Harrogate (after a 3 hour wait for the RAC! :sleepy1:) so we'll see how they/Yamaha UK perform.

I will keep you posted and hopefully add a bit more weight towards Steve D's case.

There are some bikes out there that have not had any problem at all and some of the original batch imported at that.
To put your mind at ease all you have to do is to remove the two screws on the cover over the expansioin bottle and push in the pin in the small black securing unit at the bottom of the cover and it will come off. Then remove the two screws on the reg / rectifier and pull out the unit. Then unplug the connector on the end of the loom from the unit, you will be able to clearly see the condition of the connectors. Check all of the connections for discolouration in the loom and in the regulator. Replacing is the reversal of this process. Make sure that the plug is pushed well home and none of the female pins on the end of the loom are pushed back into the plug itself which may have been my problem to begin with.
The bike will easily do your trip, enjoy!

Well, well! We are now in to week SEVEN, I hope that all of you guys with a similar problem are bustin the B***s of Yam UK with your calls about this issue. Unfortunately I'm working where I cannot get a M'phone signal so shall be sending another letter (I need a paper trail).
Still not even a message at home from the Dealer!:099:

As SteveD says not all bikes have had problems. I got mine this time last year and have no problems despite it living outside and being used all winter. In my case thought by the time the problem came to light I'd been using in enough and done sufficient miles that I'm pretty confident mine is ok.

Not sure how many miles you've got on your Ten yet but you might want to make sure you have done enough for any 'wear' to be noticeable when you check it.

BTW I love the avatar :)

I was talking to forum member (larf-online) who work's for Yamaha, he said the best way to ensure it does not happen is to push the pins 1mm out of line so when you re-connect it will have positive connection i.e the pins will be loaded one side to the other.
I have not got a Tenere (yet...still looking) but he told me do it as soon as you get one, it works

Hope this helps everyone

The replacement loom for mine has now arrived, less than two weeks after being ordered. IMO, it's definitely worth chasing up your dealer again. And again. And again. And etc etc

Is the bike rideable?

steveD 21-10-09 01:25

Quite frankly I am past caring, I've just got really busy (self employed) and I don't have the time to pick it up in any case. I have spent sooooo much time now writing letters, going into the Dealers and making phone calls to no avail.
I will give the dealer a wide berth in the future as they have been of little use and have not been on my side for this issue.:nutkick:
I will be sorting out a more sturdy repair if I ever get the bike back, cannot wait until the warranty has expired!

fozzy17 21-10-09 08:51

Hope it gets sorted for you, but im pretty sure 90% of it is your dealer not wanting to do it, my dealer was really good i must say, ive had things done under warrenty including the loom and everything has been changed straight away no bother.

DickyC 21-10-09 11:21

Just done as suggested SteveD and stripped it back to check connections. All look fine and was very tight. Worried when I put it back on that I might have bent the pins so removed it again! Put it back on and decided to leave it. Now piling on the miles (difficult on small Island) to highlight any issues sooner rather than later (that and the fact its a great bike to ride so hardly arduous).

Spoke to my Yam dealer here and they knew nothing of any issues but did say there was a dip stick issues that was solved.

Thanks again for advice and reasurance etc
