My version...

  • What exactly happened to your bike?
  • The usual... light on, dead clocks... dead engine. All within about 30 seconds.
  • Which dealer did you take it to? Please provide Dealership name and possibly the name of the rep that helped you.
  • I first got assistance from the AA, as I've been a member for years. I'd already had a look at the plug before he arrived, but I did need him to jump start it for me. The actual connector for the live wire had rotted away, but we managed to make what's left of it make contact. 2,000 miles later, it's still working.
  • Did they resolve the matter without any grief?
  • When I took it to the dealer, "Parkroad Powerbikes" in Southampton, they cleaned it all up again, and checked it over.
  • Was the whole loom changed?
  • As yet, no. But I have been told there may be a recall, so we're waiting... if not, they have said they will fit a new loom anyway.
So, for now, I'm still waiting really, but the bike has run okay since the roadside "bodge". I'd like to see a proper solution to stop this happening again, not just another identical loom that could (will?) go again.

Hmmmm, thought that more owners might add to the list so I had a search through earlier posts to see what I could find, and hey presto! Who is going to say that this is not a common problem:-

The following have reported on this forum breaking down because of the regulator / rectifier connection.

That's 17 not much of a problem then eh?:icon_cry:
......and that's only on this site!!!!:eusa_wall:

Perhaps they should have done a bit of testing in this country in the Winter time instead of jollying in Spain and Morrocco!:aska[1]:

I would email Yamaha directly with that list and tell there they may be more to follow plus what happened to the mod they are supposed to be doing?

Sorry to hear its been such a nightmare for you

As I've reported in one of the other threads, mine went in the middle of France. A local Yamaha dealer changed the reg/rect, but of course the problem actually lay with the connector, which failed again the day after I got it back. Managed to do a temporary repair, which got me back to UK.

Bike has now been into Bransons of Yeovil, who were aware of the problem and the cause. A new loom is on order from Yamaha.

I haven't had any direct dealing with Yamaha UK, but don't see how they can claim to be unaware of the problem.

This is my poiny exactly. They say that it is not a common problem and are unaware that it is happening so frequently, this is why I would like persons with this problem to contact either Don or Moira at Yamaha UK on 01932 358042. Give them as much grief as we are getting and make them understand that this is a major problem.

stuxtttr 12-10-09 11:09

Direct action is my answer

meet up at the NEC show and goto the Yamaha stand and make it clear that you won't leave until you have a letter stating that Yamaha Uk will fix the problem on all bikes :)

I had to do this when I owned a CCM - they sent a van out the next day and took my bike back to the factory and sorted it out.

After that I think I managed almost 2 months before it broke again ! :laughing7:

Telephone call today, they should have the 'bits' at the dealers by Friday or maybe Monday for the repair. That will be into week seven, now that's what I call a.....:moon:

.........and add another five to the list with the RTW crowd and we're up to 22 bikes with the same problem.

Heres the reply that Yamaha gave ref the rectifier issues.

I have had a reply from Yamaha today. The bulletin you have forwarded which I forwarded to Yamaha is not an official UK bulletin and will not apply here unless Yamaha UK decide to do so.

Having spoken to them about the issues they are happy to replace the breather for the modified version and to replace the cush drive as they have been doing these on a case by case basis.

They have not had any major issues with rectifiers or wiring problems within the UK, they have had one or two cases. They have advised us to check your wiring etc when you come in for the other issues. As they have had no issues with the oiled air filter in the UK.

Brewers Whoop 16-10-09 13:33

Mike, how did Yamaha reply to you - email or post? Would you be prepared to post the contact details on here?

I wonder: If all the people on this forum who have had this problem wrote a letter or email directly to the person at Yamaha who contacted you, stating their name and address, registration number, the date they had the problem, the dealer concerned, and how (or if!) it was resolved, at least then they couldn't continue to say they are unaware of the problem or that it is only 'one or two' cases. It might not greatly help those of us who have already seen the dread orange light, but if it helped kick off a recall, it may help others.

If people think this is a good idea, I'll post a new thread containing the contact details entitled something along the lines of 'If you've had reg/rect problem, please read' and ask The Good Captain to sticky it for a while.

What do y'all think?
