Hole in fuel filler neck
Because I was fed up with the slow fuel filling (especially the last liters) I made a hole in the filler neck to let the air out and to speed up the filling.
Remove the screws on top and one on the inside of the cap (don't drop them ) Checked if the was room between the neck and the tank: yes there is. Drill a hole (6 mm), don't go to far!! Finished Tank is full so I don't know if it works, to be continued...... |

Interesting. I was thinking of doing that, as the last few drops of fuel take ages to put in, but reading the owners manual, it says the air gap is necessary. Let us know how you get on, and if this allows you to squeeze another litre in!!

The air bubble is needed for stupid people who will fill the tank completely, put the bike in the sun and have a hamburger (and then sue Yamaha). Will fill up the tank tomorrow.

In my case, probably best leaving it well alone. Even during the summer, with it being stored underground, fuel is still very cold when it first goes into your tank but soon expands in the sun. don't want to be blowing fuel out of the breather pipes right in the track of the back tire!! IF I was to drill the hole out, I'd forget !! I'm not sure how much fuel expands by but the allowence in the tank is only 4.5% - doesn't sound like much does it? When you do fill it and the tank fills you may well get a jet of fuel coming out of the hole (only for a second when your full), just watch your eyes! - could you confrm if this is a problem or not ??

Tried filling up today. No fuel shower, no leakage of fuel, fast filling till 2 cm to the top of the neck, then foaming starts and filling becomes slow.
I'm happy with it. |

Good news - My '07 Varadero used to spit a bit out if you didn't back off before it got to the top!

If you're going to do this i'd strongly suggest using a hand drill not an electric one !! Even a battery powered one can have sparks around the motor commutator and that is not a good thing to have near a tank of petrol !

New record
Yesterday I put in 23.95 L
. I came at the fuel station without stuttering with 110 km on the F-trip.

Done it to my XTX & now can get an extra 15kms until the fuel light comes on.
I would only recommend one does this mod, by over fulling the fuel tank, if you are going to ride the bike at least 20kms before parking the bike, otherwise the extra fuel will over flow in hot conditions. WARNING Please only use a air or hand drill, do not use a electric drill around fuel vapour.
