Checking fan is working
Ive had my radiator cap fail and leak meaning my bike over heated on a few short trips until I could figure out what was the problem. Ive now replaced it and refill the radiator however ive ran the engine at standing still for a good 5 mins with some revving in between and the fan hadn't come on and there was quiet a fair bit of head from the engine coming. The radiator and all the hoses I could feel where roasting but no fan had come one.
Ive found out that the diagnostic mode cant be access like my old XTR on the dash and the fan tested. I ran a bit of electrical cable and testing the fan directly to the battery and it was working. How long on tick over does it take for your fan to come on? And if the fan is working but isn't coming on what else can I check to try and found out if there is a problem and where it lyes?

The fan doesn't cut in till the coolant temperature in the cylinder head reaches 102C, which is pretty hot (it cuts out again when the temperature falls to 95C).
I have a coolant temperature gauge fitted to mine (sender in the top hose), mainly because I don't trust warning lights (they only come on when it's too late!) Anyhow, it gives a good indication of what's going on. I've attached a PDF of some temperature readings (against elapsed time at idle) which I recorded using the Yamaha diagnostic tool and my temperature gauge. Might be useful? There's probably nothing wrong, just paranoia setting in as a result of your radiator cap issue! ![]() If you're really concerned that the temperature warning light and fan are not being triggered by the ECU (feed off the same sender) then you could drain the coolant, remove the sender and test its resistance as the temperature increases whilst immersed in a pan of water on the stove (as per workshop manual)... ![]() You could also get yourself a diagnostic tool. TBH, it's been well worth the outlay over the years I've had one. |

cheers Pleiades
only just found out that the tenere doesn't have a diag mode like the XTR/X. the Daig tool is on the purchase list do you have a link to a website to buy one (quick look on ebay and theres a few universal ones) Thanks for your temp list as it seems a lot longer than what I remember my XTR use to take to put the fan on (my fan failed which is why I'm cautious) though about taking the switch out but I have a habit of breaking things and also at the same time thought it was something else ie the radiator cap lets hope it was just me being impatience and the fan is working. run out on sat so will have a test there

Don't bother with the non-genuine ones; they can be unreliable. The genuine article is quite reasonably priced.
I got mine from here in Holland. It was, and still is, the cheapest place to get them even though the Euro/Sterling exchange rate isn't what it was thank to the Brexiteers! ![]() |

The first time I ever heard the fan, I nearly **** myself.
I was in Marbella in Spain in June. Not surprising that the temp had hit that high, parts of me that had never seen sweat before were dripping. Suddenly, this horrific noise at the traffic lights... That is only the first of three times I've ever heard it. All three times have been in city, slow-moving traffic.
