Lane splitting

Lane splitting is allowed here but as this is a regional town I don't do it very often; riding is mostly about enjoying the ride not racing it!
However, I thought about it the other day but then cancelled the idea as I suspected the bars were wider than my XT600e. I measured them and the Tenere is at least 100mm wider (with my new hand guards).
Does anyone lane split with the Ten? Any problems?

We call it filtering over here. Down here in the south east if you didn't filter you might as well drive a car. It's sadly the only way you can move about on most motorways, towns and cities within a reasonable time frame. Thankfully most motorists are now aware of motorcycles filtering and will move over within their lane to allow you through. There are the occasional ones that will try to baulk you but if you've got your wits about you they don't cause too much problems. As for width I've never found it a problem, in fact the tenere is quite skinny compared to what some of the 'professional' filterers ride, and apart from van mirrors I usually bottle out long before a gap's too narrow. I just googled Townsville and apart from it having a very unimaginable name it looks a lovely part of Australia.

The Ten is tall. Handles are above most saloon mirrors. Just the 4x4s and vans to watch.

Filtering in traffic is one the great art forms of riding a bike as has already been said if you can't why ride a bike!!! Never been able to match a London courier but smart enough to move over let them through give e'm 20 yards and tag on the back and let then do all the hard work the cars look for you then.

Ah filtering.....

Perfectly legal here in the UK, although if there is an incident you really need to be able to show you were doing it 'right' 'Right' has many meanings to many people.

My 'right' is keeping the speed down, 1st or 2nd gear only, 10mph over the ambient speed of others, and you have to have eyes everywhere. I ride the full width of the UK (the northern bit near the Scottish border) Carlisle at the west has atrocious drivers, they care nothing for the fact that riders may be filtering through and will switch lanes without a single thought (or a mirror check). Yet over the East in Newcastle, its a different story, drivers tend to leave lots of room and use them flashing things at the corner of cars,

I'm happy enough with the Tenere and filtering, it's tall and offers great visibilty, just watch the bars and vehicle wing/door mirrors.

The Ten feels a bit wider, probably because it's so high. In S Africa I think it's legal (there's little to no law enforcement) and I filter only when the gap is wide enough and cars are not moving, like at intersection with red traffic light or stop street.

Never had any issues filtering on the Ten with 105cm bars and tin boxes on. You've, as already mentioned, just got to it sensibly; be wary and make sure the speed differential between you and the traffic you're passing isn't too great.

Also worth getting to know what models of cars contain drivers that do unpredictable things and/or have an aggressive driving style and a negative attitude to motorcyclists. It varies from place to place, country to country, but everywhere in the world seems to have them. In my experience, round here, it's BMWs, Audis and Mercs you need to be most wary of.

Probably best not to filter/lane split like this fellow...

Good info Pepsi. ...I simply don't understand why people filter at speed..it's asking for trouble. The Tenere is a great bike to filter on I find. You mentioned the crazy pizza delivery guys, well on a recent ride through London the traffic was so bad even the couriers and pizza boys were at a standstill! ...And Pleiades. ..that guy in the video is insane!
