Different air cleaners on new Tenere's
I'm ashamed to say that I've got two Tenere's, one in South Africa and one in Australia.
The blue one I got in January in SA is a 2014 model with 2600km. It has Scorpion pipes and came stock from Yamaha with a DNA stage 2 filter and cover. The bike is very quick and a pleasure to ride. It would pull strong from under 2000rpm right through to redline. To wheelie it in first gear is easy, one just has to open the throttle fast. Now the grey bike in Aus (also 2014 model) which I got on a promotion by Yamaha Australia (I'm moving over there next year) came with a single Barret pipe and some upgrades to the tune of about AU$2900, which includes the suspension. All part of the promotion. When I was over there last month I received the grey bike and ran it in. What disappointed me was that the bike came with the "old" air filter and snorkel. It had no power under 3000rpm and felt like a slug compared to the blue one with the "open" air cleaner. I thought Yamaha had changed the stock filters to the DNA stage 2 on the newer models ? Why would they still fit the snorkel filter in Aus ? Don't all new tenere's come with DNA stage 2 filters or is it up to the agents in the different countries ? Anyone with a new model bike like to comment ? |

TBH, I wasn't aware that Yamaha sold any bikes with DNA filtration (unless that is the customer specifically asked for it to be fitted).
Australian market Teneres have always been fitted with different filters (foam rather than paper) from those in most other countries due to the more dusty conditions. |

Thanks Pleiades. Then it must be Yamaha South Africa that's enhancing their Tenere's by fitting the DNA filter.
I did not open the filter box of the bike in Aus so can't tell what filter is in there as standard. But I don't like the snorkel and will modify/replace it when I'm there again. Fortunately I won't be staying too far from Kev and will most likely visit him for some advice and modifications ![]() |

It might just be the fact the Aussie Z has a foam filter the makes it feel different? I can't really say as I've never ridden a stock Ten with a foam filter, only one that's been "messed about" with!

Its funny, I dont think there is alot of communication over here with the Aust Yamaha dealers. My Ten was supplied with a paper element that they ran around the shop looking for on the day of delivery. The dealer said there was some TSB they had to remove the foam one but he did me a favour and supplied the foamy as well.
Definitely no DNA, my guess the SA dealer is onto it and fitting them standard, similar to the video Capt just posted about Aussie dealers kitting the bikes out with everything before sale(at a price though!!) |

To clear this up I spoke to the local Yamaha dealer in our town and found out that Yamaha South Africa has decided to supply their Tenere's with DNA stage 2 filtration due to the dusty conditions we ride in. The bikes come with the aftermarket filters supplied in the crates with the bikes to dealers.
The importers here are actually Kawasaki who supply the DNA filters to Yamaha. So I'll probably just get a DNA kit here before I migrate to Aus next year for the bike there. |
