Painting Exhausts

Hi,

I am new here and recently bought a Yamaha XT 660 X 2008 model. I want to paint the bike matte black. I asked a few paint shops if they can paint the exhausts. They all said it would be too hot. I have titanium Akrapovic slip on as well, i want to paint those too. Is that even possible? Can somebody help me with this and what i need to use etc.?

(pardon my English)

Gr,

I'd say a car accessory shop would be your best bet.
I used some Exhaust Header paint (spray) on a previous bike that was good for 800 degrees. Worked really well and lasted. As with most painting it's all in the preparation.

The only thing I've ever found that works long term on exhausts (headers and silencers) is a decent ceramic coating such as Camcoat. You can DIY it with reasonably good results, but a professional paint shop or powder coaters should offer a cermaic coating service.

I would recomend ceramic coating. Google if there are any nearby your location. Ceramic coating can be done on the outside as well as on the inside of the exhaust. There are also some DIY kits but they are not as good, the ceramic coating needs to be cured in a oven.

Edit: next time I will refresh before posting.... Pleiades posted the same..

I already asked a powder company nearby and they said that it cannot be done. The exhaust are going to get too hot for powder coating. The specialist in paint jobs motorbike said the exhaust cannot be painted because of the heat:S

You need to go and talk to a better "specialist"!

I guess you must have missed the link in my earlier post:

http://www.camcoat.com/main/coatings3.html

Ceramic coating is different from a standard powder coating used for frames, wheels etc. Cereamic is good for 1000+C. It is suitable to coat manifolds, turbo charger casings, brake calipers, radiators and even pistons!

This link will give you an idea of pricing and what can be achieved with exhaust parts:

http://www.camcoat.com/main/coatings9.html

It isn't actually all that expensive.

Not sure whether is will work on riveted silencers like the Akras? Because they are not made entirely of one metal, the different metals will expand at different rates and there will be small amounts of movement at the rivet joints. Cast, formed and welded parts expand and contract more uniformly.

Thanks! I will find a specialist for this. I hope that the akras will work as well. Maybe i'll buy a wrap for the akra silencer, that way the silencer is black and all other pipes are coated.

I think a ceramic coating would possibly work better on the Akras if you took the silencer apart and coated the two ends and the main tube separately, then reassembled it keeping the rivet bands in stainless. I reckon that might look quite good?

I think so yes . I want my Yamaha XTX All matt black. So step by step I will have it finished. Maybe turquoise rim stripes and accents!

I had my exhausts for my Triumph coated in a brilliant matt finish by these guys Performance 1 Coatings.
I had also looked to Camcoat, but it was more expensive.
Really happy about the overall experience.
