wont rev beyond 3200 rpm
Hi All
I bought a 2004 xt660r last year to do a bit of green laning on and to use in my local quarry on a sunny sunday, so it obviously gets very little use ![]() My road bike is a 2004 ZX9r so i was expecting a massive power drop on the XT but i cant even lift the front wheel when i need to without it running out of revs any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks Gary |

you can configure the main display to show engine rpm this way you can be sure of your engine speed and compare it to the add on unit.
if you search though kevin's mods you will find the set up for showing engine rpm. it revs to around 7k but being a single sounds a bit harsh and feels more like 5k! |

Thanks for the reply, i have accessed the rev counter through the diagnostic mode, it shows up ok but just registers 0 all the time so i can only go off the aftermarket one wich show peak revs at about 3200, my son leaves me for dead on his '98 ER500 twin which should also have about 50bhp, it really feels like its hitting a rev limiter or badly restricted air intake.

there is something wrong here if the diag mode rpm display is always showing "0"
did you buy the bike 2nd hand? and who fitted the add on rpm unit? could be something wrong with the way it has been wired. Can you go back to standard by removing the unit and see what happens. in the old days a meter could read the rpm by sniffing the spark plug HT pulse. Could your plug lead be damaged. I would take it to a dealer for a check specially in the wake of the diag display not working as it should. ONe last thing, assuming you are in the uk could this bike have been restricted for lower class license? Incidentally, I was put out by the lack of rpm initially, but soon got used to the feel of the engine vibrations and note to tell what was going on and frankly now, I do not need it |

If it is the former, it could be that where it was tapped into the orange wire it has cause a bad or broken connection. If the ECU isn't reading rpm correctly, or the dash for that matter, then running problems are quite possible. As bonjo mentioned, disconnect the aftermarket tacho and check all the wiring. See if you can get a reading on the dash as a starter... |

the rev counter is the wrap around type i fitted it a couple of weeks ago to see if it was reaching maximum revs or not, i was thinking the same as you Bonjo after years of riding high reving multi's was i just expecting too much. the bike is a UK model and as far as i can see there is no restrictor fitted to the throttle body.
