Hi All,

Trust you all had a good Christmas.

My XT660Z has just had its 42K Mile service. The mechanic advised that the rear shock was past its best and should be replaced. He did say that I would not have noticed it due to it deteriorating gradually.

I would like some advise on whether it is possible to get it serviced or do you have to replace it?

If it cannot be serviced then would it be better to change to an after market manufacturer like Ohlins? they seem a bit expensive at �750 +?

Also I guess that if the rear is tired then the Front forks would be due a service?

Officially the Sachs shock is non-serviceable (other than changing the spring). However, if you search hard, you might just find someone who is prepared to do it?

It probably isn't worth spending any money on though because the OE shock is fairly sh!t anyway, even when in full working order. You'd be far better off putting the money you'd spend on getting it serviced towards a new "better" shock. A good aftermarket shock will have far better damping, a higher quality spring, more adjustment, spare parts availability and it will be properly rebuildable. Take a look at Yacugar/Hyperpro or Nitron as good quality, cost effective alternatives to the more pricy offerings from Ohlins and Wilbers.

Hi colros,

keep us posted with your findings/steps. I will be looking at changing front forks and rear shock in the very near future and would be great to know who you buy from.

If you live in the UK, these guys has been reported in the forum to be very reliable, although they seem to focus pretty much only on Ohlins brand (or at least this is the impression I got when I contacted them):

I have used FTR for all my suspension parts for a good few years. Their website is a bit iffy, but don't let that put you off, give Kevin a call - he and the team are very knowledgeable and more than willing to help and advise.

At least their is a german shop who will and can service the Sachs shock:

I know of two guys who did the complete service to the OEM shock for around 139,- Euro. Both are very pleased with the result.

I'm just wondering what a service may include. Is nt it a question of replacing the spring and topping up the gas.

A new gas filling may included but not necessarly a new spring.
New seals, new oil.
And if you may need to replace the spring it is far more expensive than the 140,- Euro I quoted.
