Is this a Regulator fault? - .: XT660.com

Hi all my mate has a XT660R, he was riding it when he lost the dash lights & power, after checking the fuses he called the RAC, the very nice man found another 30amp fuse blown & replaced it, bike started up & RAC man left, my mate then started off on his way home to get 200yrds up the road only for the fuse to blow again, im thinking Regulator but would value any ideas? Thanx Dave

best to stick ameter across the battery while running to check the voltage should be around 14 /14.2 volts .could be a bad earth blowing the fuse .poor connection any where .Was he working at the bike prior to this he may have loosened a connector. Check the voltage across the battery when running the engine first that will tell you right away .check the earth from the battery

Cheers spen, we both @work till Sun so i wont get a chance to get the tester on it till Mon, i was thinking Regulator but ive read thru the threads & no one has had a fuse blow on them aswell, thanx for quick reply

If the fuse is blowing, and a 30A one at that, it's more than likely a short to earth somewhere in the loom. Often the cause can be part of the loom, most likely under the tank, rubbing through on the frame. Get the tank off and do a thorough visual check of all the wiring over the whole bike, particularly where it runs close to the frame.

Hi, Pleiades is quite correct you have a dead short on that circuit, you need as stated, examine the loom for damage

i don't get the rac person, after finding a burnt out large fuse, not delving a bit deeper or at least recovering the bike to somewhere a repair could be carried out! as a 30amp fuse blowing points to a serious fault

hi Spen please don't use an ammeter (amp tester) across the battery terminals, a voltmeter is perferable!

Hi ive herd of some thing similar.

The wiring loom rubbing through under the fuel tank blowing fuses for the fuel pump etc.

Have seen that before.
Typical places:

Another reason may be the cable that runs down from the kill switch.
Had a short circuit there once as well.

Hi all, we spent a few hours trying to trace this short, it was in the cable coming down the headset earthing out on the frame by the oil filler cap, it was a botched repair done by a previous owner, all tickety boo now, Thanx for all the help & suggestions
