XTR Rear Tyre Size

Hi all,
Sincere apologies if this has already been answered (i'm sure it has somewhere) but i'm about to replace the tyres on my 2006 XTR with TCK80's. Will a 140 fit on the rear, and if so what is the advantage over the 130?
Cheers in advance.

Hi Billy,

We fitted 140 Hiedenau K60 scouts on both our bikes because we couldn't get the 130. No problems at all but the clearance between the tyre and swing arm was reduced - it caused no fouling though.
I think a possible advantage/disadvantage of going to a 140 is that it could be a heavier duty tyre as is the K60 140. That's good if you are loaded but you need to think about how the stiffer side walls will affect travel in sand etc when you need to reduce tyre pressure for a bigger foot print. Just one more idea, we were not impressed by TK80's at all, After 7000 miles of dirt and gravel roads and 18000 of mixed roads on this trip we found the best tyre for cost/performance/longevity was the Michelin T63 and mixed with a Pirelli MT21 front made a very good package for mixed dirt/gravel/tar roads.
The TK80's were poor in mud, the T63's much better - as good as you can get for a DOT tyre any way.

Cheers

Paul

Many thanks two wheels, i will give the Heidenau's serious consideration. They look just the thing for my bike / intended use.

150's

Hi Billy

I have 150's on the back of my XTR and they fit not a problem.

I have been advised by the folks on this forum that thinner is better for handling though.

Cheers

A narrow tyre is better on lose surfaces... ie gravel roads stc..
The narrow tyre cuts though the lose top surface into the
hard base easyer than a wide tyre will...
So really it's horses for courses....

When my son had the XTR, we fitted 130 conti escape but noticed it worn a bit flat with sharper corners, so next time I fitted a 140 conti escape it has worn a bit rounder on the corners. I say when my son had the XTR becaue his riding is a bit wilder than me, 'wheelies galore'.

The only problem but nothing to do with the tyre is somebody cut it with a blade when parked at an 'Ace cafe' trip, so now I have the bike I will change it soon but with say 4mm left it still corners well.

Although a bit off topic, my son didn't often check tyre pressure so the front ran low alot giving uneven wear.

I'm not sure what to fit next time depending of the type of riding I do but I'm sure it will be 140 again.

I've just fitted a set if 140 Hiedenau K60 scouts. No clearance issues at all.
