YA817 Ohlins shock springs

After an extensive effort to locate a 90nm spring for my Ohlins, it appears that such an animal is not available.

The Australian importer says no, there's no such thing (which doesn't surprise me much...). Off The Road, in reply to my email, reckon there's no such thing too - they say the next spring up from the standard /80nm is /115nm. Surely this can't be right.

Anyone got any ideas?

Oops. Looks like I've got egg on my face again...

Minkyhead, thanks heaps for sorting out the (non-)mystery. I'm much obliged for your time, mate.

I'm giong to be in the UK on holiday at the end of April for a few days, but nowhere near Scotland, much to my annoyance. So a beer is possibly out of the question until I can get there one day.

Try hardracing.com in the U.S. they are the best prices and great to deal with.
Oh and I belive they even supply the Aus dealer so shhh don't tell Steve.
They deal direct with Ohlins as well so hope it helps you out, cheers.

Hi,
I reckon that the NM says in someway to what weight the spring fits. Is that correct? If it is, then I have to ask why off-the-road offers springs for exactly your requirement. But hey, you got a resolution.

Regards,
Marcus

No, I initially thought that. However, OTR categorically stated that it did not have a spring to suit the YA817 to specifically suit my weight. It might be that the number I gave them confused the issue, but maybe they should have known enough to offer the 90nm spring as shown by minkyhead.

The 115nm spring offered by them is almost 50% stronger than the standard 80nm. Clearly this is excessive, as correct static sag can be achieved with the 80 if it's screwed down hard enough. However, as minkyhead stated, that makes the ride harsh. Better to get a spring a bit heavier, and get both static sag and ride height right imo. This improves ride quality.

Thanks for you thoughts though, Marcus.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, I too have looked for a 90NM spring for my Ohlins shock after being told.by OTR that the hardest spring they can offer is for a 115kg rider.

The spring that came on my shock was 80nm and i assumed that it was suitable for 115kg rider. However i cannot get the rider sag anywhere near. The 40-50mm recomended by ohlins. Im at almost double that.
My weight with gear is around 120kg.
It now makes me wander if they have sent me the incorrect spring.

Hi Jon,

I did some research into the ohlins 90nm spring recently as I was looking to buy the ohlins shock and needed the bigger spring.

The 80nm spring has the code 01099-24/80. Ohlins no longer do a 90nm spring for the shock - if they did the code for it 'would' be 01099-29/90.

Minkyhead got hold of a spring with the code 698-29/90 that fitted the ohlins. As you can see the 29/90 part of the code designates 90nm spring. After some further digging I found that the spring minky got has a length of 230mm and the stock spring is 220mm long. It does fit the shock though - I've a feeling the 698-29/90 spring is from a tiger xc or something.

I contacted a UK supplier of the shock and sent them the code 698-29/90 for the 90nm spring to fit to the shock and the answer was they would search for it if I ordered the shock and see if they could find one.

OTR might have sent the wrong spring. Check the codes on the spring and if it says 24/80 then it's the 80nm one.

In the end I went with a different shock (Nitron) as they built it to my specs without all the faffing around trying to find another spring for the ohlins.

Hope that helps.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure I bought the 698- spring for my Tenere.

I've been too lazy to put it on yet, but I must do it for the reasons as mentioned earlier.

There's not much doubt in my mind that the Tenere doesn't like mis-matched front and rear suspension. Improve the rear and the front seems to deteriorate immediately. Still, it isn't an MX bike...
