Single front brake

Hi, have Anybody tried to take off one brake caliper and one disc from the front brake? I think one will be enough especially that I have already reduced the weight of my Ten - 10 kilo and I'm only 65 kilos. How much weight I can save doing this?

Cheers,
Kris

Erm, well yes I have, but only as a byproduct of changing to WP forks, not deliberately. The bike still stops well enough, but I can't really see why you'd bother if you weren't changing the forks.

The caliper doesn't really weigh much. The disc is obviously a bit more but I think you could probably achieve a similar weight saving by going for a dump before heading out on the bike

As Uber says, just taking one caliper and disc off is going to make negligible difference weight wise, and simply by the laws of physics, the braking is now going to be poorer than it was with both of them...

However, if you were doing it as part of an upgrade - that is forks, triple clamps, front wheel etc, then sure, go ahead... although having run a 270mm single disc, Brembo master cylinder and Talon front wheel in WP forks, I wouldn't say you actually save much (any?) weight as such, you just get significantly better suspension performance/travel for your [considerable] amount of money...

I would also consider going for a 300mm single disc (I think they are 298mm actually, the same as fitted to KTM 690RRs) - the 270mm is fine and plenty powerful enough, only the lever pressure is very soft and lacking in bite - good for control off-road, but can give you a 'moment' if you are used to road-bike style brakes, and need to grab a handful in an emergency situation...

Thanks guys. I will give up this idea and think about some better front suspension... But WP + excel and Talon is about half the price of the new bike maybe progressive springs first.

If you do it all with new parts, it's horribly expensive. I don't know how much Jenny spent on her bike, but I know enough to know it's a very scary number!

I've put mine together from a mix of new and second hand parts. I bought the yokes from Off-The-Road, but my forks, front wheel and master cylinder are all second-hand from an assortment of KTMs. I've not changed the rear wheel. If you count the Nitron Race shock in the rear I think I've put about 2000 into the suspension on my bike, with maybe 100 worth of servicing and fiddling to do to get it spot on. Still a lot of money, but not quite so scary (I was able to justify it by selling my enduro bike and using the Tenere for everything, rather than keeping and maintaining two bikes), and it should be *very* good when I get it all set up.

[Edit: That total cost should also go down rather than up from here on, as I'll be selling off the original parts in the new year]

But again, if you're not racing (or otherwise doing a lot of serious off-road riding) then 200 worth of Hyperpro springs and fresh fork oil would probably do just as well.

I would like to do some serious offroad but I think whatever I do with the bike it will still be too heavy for some things. I will look for Hyperpro springs. Do you suggest the standard fork oil or 15W?

I'm the wrong person to ask on that, as I've not tried refreshing the stock forks.

I know 'Gas_Up_Lets_Go' has the Hyperpro springs in his, might be worth sending him a PM if no-one else shouts out.

Depends.

The blue XT shown to the right was converted (and legalized) for an amount of probably EUR 1000.-, actually a bit less (including all needed conversion parts apart from Oehlins shock and the big engine protection). That is pretty much of Ebay luck, some cheap parts remaining from my conversion, some good friends advice, not a big deal, but very good result.
