Damaged the cats and now cutting out!!!!

I put my Newbie section that I've just bought a 2010 XTX, and by drilling into the exhaust I think I've damaged the cats causing it to cut out.

It's only done 200 miles and I'm waiting for new pipes to arrive, but what I really want to know is whether I'm gonna damage it by still riding it whilst waiting for the new pipes, or should I stop until the new pipes are fitted?????

Where did you drill the exhaust? The cat is at the very bottom of the exhaust near the link pipe.

If the exhaust is now allowing more flow you will need to increase the CO & up the idle speed to stop it cutting out.

Can you do a favor for me can you remove your left side black cover & give me the numbers off your Engine ECU, I want to see if the 2010 models are running a different ECU.

This is what you are looking for.

What I did was......I took the end caps off the exhausts, and then drilled about 8 holes into the ends of the exhausts, but this didn't make any differance to the sound, so I got a longer drill bit and drilled through the holes I'd already done and into the plate thats about half way down the exhausts. This makes it sound a lot better, but like I said it now cuts out after about 20 mins of riding. It was suggested that I may have damaged the cats??????

Re the ECU..........Mine is the same as the 2009 one in the 6th picture with the top line ending in number 11.

I suggested that you got to the cat when you mentioned a long drill bit, exactly how long was it?

It was Mansory drill about 2ft long ( was the only drill bit that was long enough to reach )............I'm really not normally this stupid, but it just seemed like a good idea at the time

Sooo...

you've broken the cat up in the pipe then?

Possibly blocked the pipe and increasing back pressure causing it to cut out?

Have you had the pipes off and given them a shake, see if they rattle?

Just food for thought.

Yeah did that and they do rattle a bit. Not too worried about the cutting out bit. I just don't wanna possibly damage the bike by using it the way it is!!!!!

You will never dill the cat with a Masonry drill bit, you need steel drill bit as the XT660 has a solid steel cone before the cat & would need a 50cm drill bit to reach the top of the cat. You may have damaged the baffles which take up 80% of the exhaust.

The only thing at around

Oh OK.......Thats cool then. So would I be correct in thinking that by using the bike as it is then it'll be OK, and the cutting out maybe just down to the a different CO level cause by the gases escaping quicker through the holes I drilled????

I will try to remove the cat from exhaust this month. Only the cat. Please, share your experience to guide me. I prefer as less as possible cutting and welding.
