They work but for a really light backup stove I prefer a few blocks of hexi. The stuff smells when you burn it (as does meths), it coats your saucepan in gunk (as does meths) but being solid you don't need to worry about spilling it and you don't need a stove as such - balance your pot on a few pebbles around it

Saw this on another website and thought it was great that i was going to try it myself but couldnt find heet over here in the UK unless you bought it online so never got round to it.

done a little bit of research - it would seem that anything with a high enough alcohol content will work.
i'm gonna try automotive brake cleaner. simply cos we have loads of it at work. needs to be the liquid type tho-not aerosol. hopefully i wont blow up. |

I make those, I probably have made dozens and gifted to lots of friends. They run on alcohol, 100� works best. Those stoves work very well, I regularly use them to warm stuff, cook things for myself or boil water. They don't work in wind tho, so I use a barrier if I'm outside.

I can share step-by-step pics of the "how to" if someone is interested. They are fairly simple to make. The design I chose (over many available) makes it possible to put a pot on the stove without any additional pot-stand :-)
