They work but for a really light backup stove I prefer a few blocks of hexi. The stuff smells when you burn it (as does meths), it coats your saucepan in gunk (as does meths) but being solid you don't need to worry about spilling it and you don't need a stove as such - balance your pot on a few pebbles around it
