Luggage on the XT

Has anyone any experience of fitting hard luggage to an XT? I've currently got a Givi Monorack base plate fixed to a Yamaha rack but it sticks up in the air 3 or 4 inches higher than it needs to. Also the rack warns of a 5kg limit. Givi's XT660 specific Monolock mounting looks a lot neater. Has anyone fitted one? Is it sturdy and easy to fit?
Also do you know a clever way of stopping your throwovers melting on the exhausts without
fitting a permanent frame.

I use givi/kappa rack on my xtr. The base of the rack is very close to the end of the bike and it looks neat. It is very easy to fit. (it took me 10 mins to mount on the bike) If you want, i can send you pics of the bike with the topcase.

XT Luggage

Engin,

I would be very grateful to see a photo or two of your luggage system.

Buck,

Thanks for sending the link. Unfortunately, I'm getting a 'page not found' error from it. What does it show?

Talking

hi everyone i know long time no see. hope everyone is fine.

right where was we.....
i got the yamaha bracket which is high but the reason for it is one it includes the hand rails for pillions (the handles are wider) two there is a couple of loops so you can fit a U-Lock under the plate.

i will agree totaly with it being high, i have found when going on rides i leave the box at home because you lose about 10-15MPH out of the top end.

the good thing i will say is i use the loops to hold the U-Lock i have comes in handy when locking my helmet to the bike and a lilttle security when parked away from home.

i put tons of crap in my box (givi flow). i always use it for work as i leave my helmet in there but i also carry a oxford monster lock and chain in there plus the u-lock there weight more then the 5kg they say but i dont see no stress marks on the bike what so ever. the braket i have uses the screw holes from the stock pillion handles, this is great cos no drilling involved.

the givi one looks good but i'm pritty sure u need to drill holes in the back of the bike to fit it and plus as it dont use the pillion handle holes so i cant see it being able to hold alot more weight then 5kg

the max i have had in the box is about 8-10kg with no trouble (only a little handling difference)

and oh yea dont listen to fran its not "like putting a roof rack on a porsche"

lol just kidding fran

hope this helps you out mate

I have a acquired the Givi monolock case carrier and the case monolock e450 on last friday (29july). The first impression of it its positive. its good to ride without no weight in my back, to keep the helmet in the box (one or two), to be able to ride at the supermarket to by small stuff... lots of things...

it wasnt i who mounted it but i supose its not very dificult because it took about 5 minutes. there is no need to make holes or change any aspect, its quite nice and not high.

The e450 case can take 2 helmets and its functional, the negative point is for the 3 kilos maximum load. of course you can put more but its on your responsability. The ideal case is the e470 but is also a bit more expensive of course.

if anyone want some photos i will provide them in the future.

correction to my last post: instead of "ideal case is the e470" i wanted to refer the E52 model.

With regard to the throwover question, what's wrong with having permanent heat shields? I got some made when I had my tailpipes made, and now I would not be without them. They're great! They give so many more options for bungeeing stuff on. Don't dismiss the idea. If you want to carry luggage they do warrant consideration.
