New M.O.T. regs / rules May 2018
Thought I'd post this as a new link for U.K. riders since the subject has come up elsewhere.
New, more stringent, rules come in to force Sunday 20th May '18 for M.O.T. testing of motor vehicles which includes firmer testing for motorcycles. As an example it talks about registration plate lights which were not previously tested and now can be classed as a 'major fault' It might be worth a read through before you find you may not be legally able ride away from the testing station. Don't like the sound of the new rules regarding exhaust noise.... (I mean music! ). , also sounds like they are getting much tougher on things like number plate as well. Steve

I think the new M.O.T. stuff is going to absolutely hammer diesel car owners.
No one listened to sense back in the late 90's when diesel was being promoted as "clean" and yet we all know it's worse, and more carcinogenic, than good ol' petrol. It's a lame Governmental attempt to have diesel cars of a certain age forced into scrap-age to comply with national emission limits and to keep the car market moving.....just my cynical, conspiratory theorist take on things.......I know, BS

But the concern is around borderline items, or just plain unscrupulous testing stations who can now legitimately create work for themselves, and charge whatever they wish to repair some faults, leaving the owner with little recourse but to appeal, and be without their bike or having to pay for recovery services to repatriate their bike. Major MOT faults:- which a failed-absent plate light is in the case of a Tenere.
This next bit is a quote "A ‘major’ fault is more serious, poses a potential safety risk to drivers and others. It could also be a defect that has a damaging impact on the environment. These faults will result in an MOT failure and the owner will not be issued with an MOT pass certificate until the issues have been rectified" +1 on Fees. If I read some those regs correctly, a bad fail means your vehicle is stuck at the MOT station for repair as you say. Surely, as the owner, you could have your vehicle low-loaded to a preferred workplace? Dangerous fails still probably can't be towed, they have to be on a flat bed.

There is an MOT franchise here called Just Mot's ....the good thing about them is thats all they do....no servicing / repairs /welding. This means no gain for them if your vehicle fails...in fact the opposite as they offer a free re-test. For my bikes I've been going to the same little independent bike shop forever. He is in the firm but fair category and as he says there is very little to check on a big old single like the Tenere! . Steve

So I'm guessing that my friendly MOT shop who used to shrug their shoulders at my Akras not having the baffles in would possibly now be forced to "major" the bike? Looks like I'm going to keep the baffles handy under the seat from now on.

I suppose it's like any exam. It's all about preparing for the day. Once you pass, it's up to you what you do thereafter...

Although I did get gently told off for blue tacking my 'big' number plate on top of my regular number plate!.....Steve
