Bike running too rich

I think my bike is running too rich (soot on exhaust, engine better without air filter, smells of fuel). Can someone point me to a thread on how to increase the O2 on the Ten? i know there is many on the topic here but which one? Thanks.

I think you mean the CO setting? Changing the CO setting only influences the fuelling at tick-over and small throttle openings (up to 2%) it'll make very little difference. Plus increasing the CO will actually make the bike richer!

Anyhow, you can't change it on the Tenere unless you buy (or borrow) one of these...

Thanks Pleiades.
So if I get one of the diag tools it wont make any difference?? So how do I get the bike leaner properly? Can I adjust the fuel somehow? Kevs fuel mod will only make the bike richer.

Dead crow in the airbox maybe? Has fuel consumption gone up recently? Did you do anything mad when you repacked the exhaust?

Fuel injected bikes are all new to me, but I thought other than Kev's magic boxes that the ECU pretty much controlled the fuel / air mix to the prevailing condition's.
I've been looking at different air filters for Tenere's & some are designed to be 'washed & cleaned' with petrol. Perhaps yours is one hence the smell?
My exhaust also has soot in the end if that's any consolation.

Nope, stage 1 DNA filter. I blocked off the crankcase breather hose to see if the colder, fresher air improves air mixture but havent taken it for a spin yet. Will see. The fuel consumption has been heavyish for a while. 18km/l. Checked the sparkplug today and yep, black. How make it leaner?? :-(

Where does the green wire hook up to?...I can't find a place for it on my xtz.
I have this tool http://au.dhgate.com/product/2014-sp...FUcJvAod8B0A9g

The green wire is the ECU COMMS, the red and black wires are permanent +12V and earth respectively. When you get the Yamaha tool, you get two sets of wiring that can be swapped at the three pin connector on the diagnostic unit to suit different Yamaha models: (1) red wire with crocodile clip, black wire with crocodile clip and a green wire with a spade connector (shown in the picture in my previous post). (2) Single three-way triangular shaped multi-plug.

On the Tenere you need option (2).

Plug on the diagnostic tool looks like this...

The port on the bike is covered with a blank female connector which looks like this...

Take the blank off and you will see the male connector which plugs into the diagnostic units female plug...

If you weren't supplied with the triangular connector then you will need to fabricate something to allow the green wire to connect to the terminal for green on the bike's diagnostic port connector. You can connect the crocodile clips direct to the battery.

BE CAREFUL THOUGH - Any miss-connection or reverse of polarity could result in ECU damage! Using the proper triangular plug will prevent any such problems as it only goes on one way.

Yeh, I have it connected correctly but it doesn't work, I thought I might have done something wrong...P.O.S.scan tool won't allow me to adjust co...it just reads "CX127" and nothing happens when pushing the buttons. My scan tool came with the triangular plug and the green wire on the same lead...EG: plug the correct lead in and the green wire is hanging there doing nothing.

Not sure about CX127 error? I can only really refer to the official Yamaha diagnostic tool, but the loose/hanging green wire doesn't sound right. In fact it sounds as though (guessing here) that its a communication error?

When connected in the normal mode (diagnostic tool connect, no buttons pressed and engine running), does the display show rpm and coolant temperature? Can you actually open the diagnostic mode (holding the mode button in and switching ignition on) and perform any of the diagnostic tests, or is it just the CO1 that doesn't work? Does the triangular plug have three wires going to it (red, black and green)?

A photo would be really helpful in this instance if you can get one...
