fazer regulator/rectifier year

Hello, the dreaded regulator/rectifier problem finally caught up with me yesterday on my way to work. I managed to finish my journey with reduced power from battery. On inspection of the well weatherproofed connector I found one of the white terminals well burned. I've tried doing a bodge at work to get me home but one of the spades coming out of the regulator was too far perished and came off. So now I need a new unit, thinking of getting a fazer one like others have but I just want to check with you guys if there's a particular year I need? Seen one for sale that's 98-2001, is that ok? Any help would be great.

Yep. That one would be fine.

You've just got to make sure you get one for an FZS 600 Fazer, NOT one for an FZ6 Fazer.

Thanks for the quick reply, do the 2 different types look the same or would I be able to see its the wrong one from pictures? The one I have seen for sale has the 3 white and 1 black 1 red wires with the connector 8 inches or so away from the unit.

Yeah, you can easily spot the difference. The 1998-2003 FZS reg/rec unit has a trailing lead as you describe. The 2004- FZ6 unit is just like the XTZ version with a socket in the body and no leads.

You need the one that has the lead, which is the exact one you've spotted for sale.

Just to give an update, I got a 2nd hand fzr reg/rec from eBay for 20, cut off the connector and crimped it to the existing wires, works a treat!

Good work. Really no need to worry about reg/rec failure at 20.

Incidentally after previous problems with the stock reg/rec I fitted a battery volt meter to the bike, I mounted the display under the speedo so I could constantly see what power the battery had. Glad I did as this alerted me to the latest fault while riding the 65 miles to work, saved me breaking down on the motorway again!!

It is strange that nearly all modern bikes don't possess a charge warning light? Alright the check engine light comes on, but only when it's too late and the battery voltage has got critically low!

I fitted a a Gammatronix LED charge indicator for exactly the same reason. Early warning is better than no warning!
