Bars out of shape
The bars in my Tenere are not straight and it's really bugging me now. It's now much but enough.
The forks are in line but the bars are not. So tonight it was bars off to see what I could see. The black mounting thingys in the headstock are not straight. The left hand side is just off centre and this is causing the problem. Any ideas how to sort this please. Mike |

Bars out of shape
The risers get knocked out of alignment very easily after a drop. Quite common really.
The usual way to sort it is too loosen the risers off under the yokes, waggle them a bit to settle them, get them in the right position and then tighten them up a again. |

Thanks for the reply but I don't think it's the risers. I think it's the actual mounting holes in the top yoke that are out of line.

you may well find that if the bikes been dropped the bolts may be bent in the steering stem ..happened to me ... i replaced them with allthread and nylock nuts .... worth a look

I've checked that as well and the bolts are fine.
It's the actual holes that the bolts go through in the top yoke. The left one is not centre of the hole in the yoke. Mike |

I've had this on mine since new. Shop denied it had ever been dropped.
Warranties out now so no recourse but I've stripped everything and can't find anything obviously wrong. Might be the same as yours - didn't think to check the holes in the yolk. Didn't think a mass produced part could be that sh|t but Yam, you surprise me no more! |

Try swapping the risers from one side to the other?

Another way to adjust the alignment of the bars to triple tree is, while sitting on the bike, to grab the bars and turn to full lock. While at full lock lever the bars a bit further into the full lock,i.e. applying a fair amount of pressure. It's amazing how much movement you can get even though everything is done up tight. If this doesn't work for you try doing the same thing but from standing in front of the bike. You can get better leverage this way. I have been adjusting front ends this way for eons. Good luck.

Tried that a still the same.
It does look like a fault with the top yolk and how it's been made. The bike has only ever been over once and i know it was not a hard fall. Since i've had it it's never been over. Mike |

The Handel Crown (the top yolk assembly) is a composite part - so you can't buy separate items normally.
The Holder (clamp, lower) bolts through the Crown, but it is not a metal to metal contact. The holes in the crown are rather large and filled with a rubber bung with a hole down the middle, at the top and bottom is a metal washer. Is it the washer that is misaligned? Or, is it the hole through the rubber? I suspect it is actually the washer, and even if it is the rubber it can still be re-aligned. You need to remove the washers, check they aren't worn (which could happen if the bolts aren't the correct torque and movement occurs. The part number for the washers is 90201-10141 and should only cost pennies (but who knows with Mr Yamaha !) There is lots of movement in the Holder, the strength comes from the clamps being fixed to the bars rather than the fixing to the Crown (Yolk). Check your bars, they do get out of geometry rather easily, it cold be that they are twisted slightly, or bent in the middle - it won't take much to throw it out at the ends. Once you know that your washers are right, assemble everything loosely, as has been suggested, turn to full lock and push the bars until you think they are aligned correctly, tighten up your bar clamps, bring the steering back and check. This will be trial and error for the most part and you'll need to do it a few times to get it right. I doubt the Crown is out, these are mass produced parts that have been cast/machined I can't see one part being out, only full batches. My money is on the washers and some brut force to get it straight again. Or, you could buy a new Crown, washers, Holder and bars.... but that's a bit excessive for a small issue (even if it does get right on your dander!)
