Fitting sprocket
Hi
I've bought a 14T JT front sprocket - the number on it is JTF308-14 but the thing is...it doesnt really fit??? i can press it onto the spline by hand about 1mm. ive lightly hit with a soft hammer and it doesn't really move. if i really give it some and smack the buggar on....it will never come off! the old one i can slide on and off by hand. I've changed a few front sprockets on other bikes in the past but have never had one this tough to fit. Any ideas? |

308 is the correct part. Has it got any visible burrs or damage to the splines?
Sounds daft, but try rotating the sprocket one spline at a time and trying to slide it on each time. I seem to recall in the dim and distant part having a similar problem on CB750 and after trying it in different positions it eventually slipped on. Worth a try... |

Changed my front sprocket three times. JT 14T (like Phil's), back to the OE sprocket as I didn't like the 14T and just recently to an OTR 15T. All slid on quite smoothly. If you're having to twot it with a hammer, something is amiss. |

And more than likely you'll cause damage to another component..... |

If you had to hit it like a blacksmith, maybe. But this is not the case.
My bike has 82000 km on the clock with sprockets hammered on the shaft and there is absolutly no wear on it, no oil leakage. |

ok cheers....some mixed opinions
as i said i have changed sprockets before (not on the Ten) and ive not had to belt them on with a hammer before. As suggested above i will try and rotate it one spline notch at a time and see if it fits on any easier. If not i will buy another one and see how that fits. Any one wanna buy a sprocket?? |

It sounds to me that the tolerances on the new part might be at the extent of here they should be. As Plieades suggests, it might be a burr, or excess paint (if it has been painted - I can't tell) - worth checking and giving each spline a gently rub with a needle file to clean it back. Or You could try heating the new sprocket up a little (boiling water), the expansion might be enough, but then to get it off you are going to have to heat it up. I'd be inclined to return it and get another one. Worth checking the splines on the drive shaft over, one may be damaged - but it doesn't look it from the photo. I certainly wouldn't use force to get it on.

The saga continues......
I tried to fit the JT by using a bit of force. It went on the spline by about 2mm and it felt solid, i really didnt what to smack it on any more. So i bought a Renthal 14T instead. Goes on no probs! |
