308 is the correct part. Has it got any visible burrs or damage to the splines?

Sounds daft, but try rotating the sprocket one spline at a time and trying to slide it on each time. I seem to recall in the dim and distant part having a similar problem on CB750 and after trying it in different positions it eventually slipped on. Worth a try...
