Why ?

Are there soooo many Ten's for sale on or around the 4000 mile mark ?

I'm just about to buy one of these baby (as soon as my sport bike sells) and I'm just a little concerned there may be some hidden issues ?

So can you guys who live with the Tenere let me know if there is anything I need to look out for when buying one ?

The one I have singled out at the moment is a 2011 with just over 4000 on the clock.

Thanks guys, the inside help is always the best....

Don't worry!

Read no more into it than people get bored and move on after a couple of years or so. The average annual mileage in the UK for motorcycles is 1500, which is why 4000 seems so common on the secondhand market.

I've known several people with BMW G650GS and 660 Tenere and they usually sell them quickly after they realize they will spend most of the time on pavement and want more top end power.

I have no idea why, at 4k they're not even run in......

No real problems to look for, grease has always been a sparse product on these bikes so check the swing arm bearings and the head bearings. Plenty of info on here to help you re-grease.

Engine paint can be flaky, and some people have issues with the spokes rusting (my 2008 bike doesn't, even after 5 winters).

Some people have issues with the vibrations, but that's a big single piston going up and down so it's to be expected. There are things you can do to suppress it. Some also have issues with wind buffeting, again I've not and I've done a few miles on the roads.

The seat can be a PITA for some, mines fine but after 5 years I would hope it is!

These bikes are very adaptable, risers for the bars, new bars (Renthal 613's are popular), gearing, fueling, luggage or home made mods can be found on most bikes. Suspension can be transformed with some HyperPro springs and oil for the front or spring /whole new shock fro the rear, or stock does just fine - all depends what you want to do with the bike.

Whatever you spend, keep a few quid back to tweak it a little, if it needs it or not, you'll still want to personalise it.

Now that is some great info and advice, thanks.....

Mine is coming up to 40 000 miles now (30 to go) and the only things I've needed to replace in the rear wheel bearings and I've just done the head race bearings. Front pads only just changed! On third set of rears. Changed chain and sprockets at 18k but fitted a scotoiler and new one is still going strong.
I have a owners review on my website that you might find useful.
I think most people buy them to get into the adventure scene but then find them to underpowered having come from a multi cylinder road bike. Or it could be they are a little tall?

Hi Gibbo.
Mostly boredom I presume. You have had some good advice here. I would add that you probably need to check for wear on the cush drives in the rear wheel hub. They do seem to go quickly on some bikes. Perhaps you should ask the seller for service records or major work carried out. Other niggles can be rectifiers, wiring faults and frame corrosion. For 4k, you should be looking at a bike in very good condition.
