Lakes 2011 - Meeting Summary
Please feel free to post your photos in this thread, here are my photos, due to rain though only a few turned out, not really very good, sorry.
Road missiles as warned by GULG My bike after an off road training session on the Friday. XTX's are not supposed to go offroad! A little road off the Kirkstone Pass called "The Struggle", brilliant ride on an XT.

A bit off topic but - Couldn't do the Nav on Saturday as I was meeting up with my brother. After a sunny mornings ride around Kirkby Lonsdale, Ingleton and Hawes we headed down to the bottom end of Windermere and the museum there. Cars, bikes and the Donald Campbell exhibition. And they say the Ten is bad for buffeting. My ten and my old CB And something a little faster

NavtXT - The aftermath...
To all those that had a go, I thank you. I know some were a little sceptical about it, but had a go anyway. Some thought the day bagan at 12:00 (tut tut), others had a real go and went for glory!
Basically, everyone got a book of maps (yes the quality wasn't great) and locations of lots of marker points. For each marker point there were some questions (to qualify you were actually there). People got points for visiting markers, some had higher value than others. First of the day to come knocking at 08:00 was TenereDoug, who employed the help of technology to help him. leaving the site some 45 minutes later in a whirl of dust, noise and fluttering papers...... Closely followed by Bear, who was using a different strategy - "If I find one it will be a miracle" were his parting words as he too left the site in cacophony of exhast noise. One by one, team by team they left. Stevedud took the opportunity to figure out where the 'on' button was on his GPS, then what followed was a nothing short of amazing! withing the hour, waypoints marked, route plotted they were away. SelinaXC and Onanist, they had tent zipper failure and didn't manage to break free of it's grip until the sun had left the yard arm and was looking lovingly towards the western horizon... The site was silent........ First back, with a staggering score, Bear...... Enduro374 was next, having spent the afternoon doing some mods to his bike.... Again, one by one, tick tock, tick tock....... the riders returned. Excuse of the day "I'm giving you my score card by the medium of paper mush" - it set the scence for the rest of Midlifes weekend. 18:00 was a few minutes away, when with seconds to spare Uberthumper returned, and last in, taking more penalty points than some had to loose (over 200) was TenereDoug (we decided to give 10 penalty points for every minute late the guys were). The BBQ lit, battling winds and driving rain we struggled on to provide 60 Burgers (thanks to Smoggs, who jumped in when Keithblade though it was a good time for a shower!) and 100 sausages - If I ever see another sausage again, it will be too soon. All the while, employing more synapses than he had to give, Stumpy dave was adding, calculating, ordering until finally, we had the results!!! There catagories were for the taking: Single Rider Winner, taking nearly all the markers -> Uberthumper Second, who would have won if he had returned 10 minute earlier -> TenereDoug Third, and also taking 'most compact tent' -> Tequilasunrise Team Winner -> Irishguyonabike and Brucetoper1 Single Rider, Non GPS Winner -> Uberthumper and one last prize, the Stumpydave Memorial Spoon, given to the lowest score of the day. -> Bear Well done to everyone, it seams everyone had there own event, and lots of people reported how they had enjoyed the new format. Next year there will be lots more markers, over a wider area, and lets hope the winners will come back to defend their crowns.

Many thanks to all who organised and helped make it a great weekend.
The Nav XT was a good fun and I was able to see parts of the Lakes I would never had known were there. . |

The NavtXT
Weather.... oh no you said not to mention it! Seriously Positives - navXT has to stay, expand on that more? More markers possibly, you already made it a whole day and I liked that. I got to see alot of the Lakes, I am certain I saw more than if I had gone by myself and rode round, the navXT ensured you rode some awesome stuff (the passes come to mind). More positives - Offroading, good informal training, the guys leading did a good job (enduro374 and Stoic Bloke). Stoic Bloke was reassuring when I came to a bomb hole I was worried about. He advised a line, I followed instruction and it was easy once i had done it! On a personal note the way I could improve is trade my X for a Tenere so I can tackle the off road markers with confidence. Negatives - None really - I lost my appetite for Sundays ride if I am honest, only because I was worried about having a great but rain soaked day (both Friday and Saturday I was soaked and had to dry out boots etc overnight) which you say did not happen later on (but it was raining hard in the morning from my B&B) but I got soaked going home for sure (4 hr ride). I still ache now and my right ankle hurts to walk on (for no reason I know of). Motorcycle bike fit I am not! Most improvements for me would come from stuff not in your control like better wet weather riding gear, more suited bike, map bag on the bike rather than in a ruck sack, ditch the Satnav (I only really used it for the last 6 miles to find the camp site & B&B), the map would be better as was proved by the results. One suggestion and tell me to "f off you saddo"! but when I was meeting people I would have loved to know their real name and forum name (without asking), that way you get a sense of perspective as you see these people post stuff here and think you get a feel for them, you meet them and bang nothing like you expect. Yourself, Doug, Keith, Stumpdave were obvious as I have seen photos in the forum so felt I knew you even though I have never met you/them. Maybe some crappy sticker for day 1 until most have met. On Friday it was too many names and who were they on the forum. I felt a fool asking their forum name but once I knew I was like oh blah blah blah etc. I could immediatly make conversation about a, b, c d etc based on threads from here. I dont have a cool suggestion just a suggestion.
