I like the 1200Z. I will never own one as adventure RTW is not for me. Too heavy for off road but then I guess this is a comfy road bike really. I think some of the 660's faults have been addressed on this bike but then to be honest I dont think you can compare them.

Worth having in the range if only to give a non BMW option.

Capt'n,
There is a choice missing,

-> It doesn't live up to the hype

That would be my choice. Yamaha wound the world up with promises of a desert raider, a RTW bike but the reality is it's just another bike to fit into the GS road warrior bracket, not the KTM challenger all the hype suggested.

Oh, and another choice.

-> Like I'm going to spend 14K on a bike I can't see before I get delivery.

(That is if Mr Yamaha is really interested)

well, since you're asking.

I prefer the styling of the 660. The ST is just a bit too bulky to my taste. Looks too much like a Varadero as well. And those plastic tank/radiator protectors look very cheap.

The ST will be a cracking long distance tourer on paved roads, I'm sure. But all the "adventure" buzz Yamaha is selling around it is just marketing BS (pardon my French). It's actually just a beefy TDM with a shaft drive and a couple nice electronic gizmo's. But I'm sure its looks will appeal to the Ewan and Charlie fans...

Pricewise it should have been cheaper than the Beemer to really compete with it imho.

As a GS competitor- I like it.
As a 990 ADV competitor (which is what the hype got me thinking\hoping)- I don't like it.
I won't be buying for the same reason that I won't buy a GS 1200.
The bike just don't fit my needs\wants. And I think that it costs too much.
If Yamaha want to take a big chunk out of the GS market share, they should have priced it cheaper than the GS.

I think this year Ill just bite the bullet and get me a nice 990 adv white. Im tired of waiting for the perfect bike. The Ten is a great machine but it just doesn't do it for me, my gf and our luggage. Was nice dreaming at S10 though...

All good points that I agree with, this bike was hyped as a RTW beduin inspired monster that should blow away BMUU and compete with the KTM as a serious all terrain bike. What seems to have been produced is a road leviathan (a quarter ton, really!)

As it is its just another road bike with long travel suspension and off road clothes.
I think this is going to sum up this bike for an awful lot of people. not a bad bike at all, but after all the Yamaha inspired hype. Falls short of expectation, and too pricey, and Yamaha only have themselves to blame.

I'd like to see the initial reports from people who take this serious off roading, I'd like to be proven wrong but fear that I wont.

I have no idea how they got from the 'desert-Tuareg-Paris-Dakar' bike show concept bike of a few months ago... to this.

If I had ever been seriously interested in this bike I'd be cancelling my order now out of spite! Then again I'm more than happy with the Tnr and to be honest I reckon this will sell. I don't like the Varadero either but I see plenty around. These bikes make good road tourers but the RTW bit got lost in translation, I reckon.

Vive la difference.

I definately wont be getting one. I prefer it to the Suzuki and Honda looks wise, but that doesn't mean its good. I personally think it will be too heavy for serious off roaders. Lastly and most importantly its FAR TOO EXPENSIVE.
