John,

I was going to ask you about 2nd gear mingers, I read you wheelie 'resume' in another post, so you seem to be the man for advice on that sort of thing.

1st gear wheelies on the XTX are not a problem and are a source of great enjoyment from every set of lights, but its all over too quick, usually by the other side of the lights I've hit the rev limiter. I'd consider a clutchless gear change, except for the fact that it cost me $2000 to replace a few gears on an R6 - farked from a years worth of clutchless gear changes while wheelying... don't want to go there again with Yammy gear boxes.

I've nearly totally shagged my XTXs chain trying to work out 2nd gear wheelies using the idea that wheelies are supposed to be based on torque, not valve bouncing revs... I just can't work it out - I've tried launching it from a few revs, up to "a lot",but obviously not 'enough'... and if 'enough' is any more than the most I've tried so far, IMHO its too risky...

So you're saying that unless you thrash the nuts off it, a stock XTX is not going to come up in second anway? (at least not without a rish of putting a foot peg through you foot)...

Mic.

Here are some old photos of me in my young days, I was obsessed with wheelies.

Want to wheelie, first step learn the back brake, that's your life saver. Wheeling has nothing to do with balance, it's being in total control. It's all about throttle & brake control as soon as the front wheel leaves the ground.

You need to first need to learn the rear brake, to do this you need to train you mind when to push the rear brake. As most riders take their feet off the pegs as soon as the front wheel gets to high.

Fit a 14 tooth sprocket for training. You first need to pop the clutch in 2nd gear at low RPM & hit the rear brake as soon as it gets up. After a few hours your mine will know that the brake will save you. You must repeat this process over & over getting the bike higher & higher, until the front wheel is well over your head. If you battle to push the rear brake, try riding the brake a little when popping the front wheel up, or adjust the rear brake pedal up. Do not let the motor rev out, you must save the bike with the rear brake, just shoot it up, brake & straight down, that all you need to do for now. That's how I learn't

Then once you are sure your foot will save you, shoot the bike & this time add a little blip of throttle & over time you will get the action, throttle brake, throttle brake.

For a smooth wheelie you would be applying brake pressure all the time against the throttle, I.E. riding the rear brake as well as accelerating.
I will never wheelie a bike if it does not have a good rear brake
