Larger Fuel Tank

Has anyone on here (or know of someone who has) fitted a larger tank from another model of bike e.g. TT600 21/23L tanks, or perhaps even a KTM Adventure tank?

I know that offtheroad do one but it is very expensive, a would also like to know if there is a cheaper option to even increase it by a few litres.

I'm wondering why Accerbis hasn't came up with a larger tank. I used to have one on my old XT600, so when I filled up it last 450 Km. And tank cost it was half of the one shown @ O-T-R.

Saludos,

Mauro

Well according to Thorsten at OTR, the Acerbis tanks were/are plastic. The ones you get from OTR are carbon moulded and aledgedly unbreakable. That, according to Thorsten, is the major reason for the price difference. I also got a salespitch that there were some technical difficulties that needed to be overcome in the design for the 660R that was not needed for previous XT's (think it was something with the fuelpump, ???). This also increased the cost. Don't ask me what the difficulties were exactly. I stopped listening when he had told me they'd been overcome :).

Still waiting on the tanks I ordered from OTR. I'll be sure to review them thoroughly here on the boards when I get them installed.

By the way, when I did simillar research on the subject I found these guys in USA : http://www.tourtank.com/ . Not sure what a contraption like that will do to your insurance. But hats off to them for at least providing an alternative. In the end I decided that this was just a shiny and unnecessarily expensive, jerry-can solution.

Maybe we should all email acerbis asking if they intend to make a 22 lt tank for the XT660.
If enough people said they wanted one then just maybe Acerbis will make them, they should also cost a lot less than the 900e they are asking for the one's on the net.
Acerbis tank's should be about 250 .

Hey McThor,

You are right. I remember when I got my PCIII installed I found a couple of electronic contacts which did not exist on the other tank.
Any way I have to wait for an OTR sale-off because the alternative one you mentioned it looks like a beer's barrel more than a reserve tank :laughing9: .

Pls. let me know how it works as soon as you get it installed and if you can take some pictures to show, even better.

Saludos from Chile,

Mauro

Beerbarrel, eh? Hmmmm...not bad Mauro. Not bad idea at all! Think I might order one after all...hehe.

Oh and ofcourse I will post pictures. I am in fact thinking of making a "how to fit OTR large tank" video. Allthough I do know how to hold a wrench and a screwdriver, I am by no means a technical genious. I'm however hoping that the tank will be easy enough to install, even with my limited technical capabilities.

Btw...Thorsten at OTR said he sent the tanks Thursday. As of today, I haven't recieved anything. The waiting is killing me!

Be patient, for my PCIII ,Leo Vince exaust & BMC filter I had to wait for month!!! This is the problem to live at the end of the world.

Lucky you. Shortly, you'll recover all the time you're waiting now going once in a while to fill up. So, worth to wait.:icon_scoot[1]:

Awaiting your video.

I would probably buy a larger fuel tank if there was one avaiable that did not cost me an arm and a leg. At the moment i OTR tank it too much so i think i might be looking at carrying some either metal jerry cans or plastic fuel containers to carry my extra fuel in.

Only thing i am wonder which at the moment to go for. Metal being very easily dented and possibled pierced by falling off the bike and heavy. Or plastic that can bend and flex more, is lighter but can still be pierced, not be locked to stop people steeling my fuel, cant be fixed as easy metal.
