Hi all...

Just been in to my local Yamaha dealer Keith Dixon's, Accrington, Lancs.
He has just got one Orange and one Blue XTX in the showroom. Just arrived. He told me they would probably be the last he would be getting this year. So if you want an XTX perhaps its best not to wait to long and visit your local dealer.

Am off out for a ride over the Trough of Bowland.

Still enjoying my 07 XTX no problems 3000 miles now.

My 2 cents

I've had my XTR for about a month now. It is bought with the intention to drive from Denmark to South Africa primo November. So a lot of extras will be fitted in the not so distant future. I'll be sure to review those when I get them.

I've done about 1100km now. Most of those done on a 3 day camping and fieldtesting trip in my holiday. Including red-light chasing, minor offroading, highway traveling and some rural freeway thumping, I've been getting 19.1km/l. Keep in mind that this is with 2x43l fully loaded alu panniers, a fully packed matilda pack on the back rack, and a 100kg danish motorcyclist. Can't realy complain about the km's/l on that. For local commute and day to day use, the 15l tank is adequate. But for the "authentic go anywhere, anytime bike" that Yamaha claims, 15l is cutting it a little too slim, imho.

The bike is fairly light and the rider sits quite high. I'm 1,84m and cannot flatfoot the ground. In strong winds and open highways, it can be quite a handfull to keep a straight trajectory. Especially when overtaking trucks, you realy need to run a tight ship and pay attention. It's not a big problem, but comming from a heavier bike, it is certainly something that I've noticed.

Which brings me to the windshield. Or lack thereof. At high speeds, the fact that you catch the winds square in the chest ,is very pronounced. It puts strain on your lower back and/or your hands, depending on your ridingstyle. You either have to lean into the wind (strains lower back), or sit relaxed back and then hold on with your hands. Pretty soon they'll become white and numb. I interchanged between the two styles during my trip when I was riding on highway. To me, an extended windshield is definately on the "must get" list.

I have not personally experienced any cutouts og engine stalls. Low revs or high. To be honest, if I hadn't read about it on this forum, I would have thought it was malicious slander from Yamaha's competitors. The engine runs surprisingly smooth for a singlestroke and is as responsive in towntraffic, as it is quick on the highway. The gearchange works surely and efficiently. You are never in doubt if your gearchange was succesfull. Neutral is easy to find from both 1'st and 2'nd gear and the gearbox is forgiving enough should you overtap it. But without being an annoyance between gearshifts from 1'st to 2'nd. I did get a chance to drive in some heavy sand at the westcoast even though I haven't fitted knobblies for the job yet. Despite the stock street tyres it actually performed ok. I feel confident that it will perfom with excellence once I get "propper" tyres fitted. The low clearence due to the underfitted dual exhausts, is not going to be a huge problem unless you are realy into some serious offroad. A decent bashplate should see you through common occuring offroad conditions without too much trouble. During my short offroad/sanddune testing, the engine never missed a step, and seemed to thump happily in the frame no matter how I punished it. It was like it was saying "yeah, I'm used to work for a living. Do your worst, mate!". How it will hold up in an extended trial (such as a trip across Africa), only time will tell. But it's performance during my short 3 day trial, leaves me with a good feeling in my gut. For very heavy extended offroad it may pay off to take off a tooth or two from the drive sprocket. But personally the gearing suits me fine for my purpose.

I was never a big fan of digital LCD displays. Guess I'm kind of oldfashioned that way. Digital display can't be read out of the corner of your eye. You have to look straight at it. Having said that, the display on the XTR is easy to read at even the most casual glance and you quickly get used to it. The light is a pleasant green-ish teint that supplies sufficient light, without becomming a glare and an eyecatcher to distract you.

Warning lights, turnsignal lights, N lamp, seem puny and small at first glance. But they supply surprisingly bright light that does catch your eye. I've not yet forgotten to turn off the turnsignal. Maybe it's just me, but the reservetankt light seems even more powerfull than the rest. I was definately not in doubt when it came on. Pretty nifty thing that the secondary trip resets by itself when that happens. Alzheimers is catching up with me, and now I don't have to remember at what trip the light came on :).

As far as accesories go, there is simply too much out there to even begin reviewing it in a single thread. But let me just mention the rack and panniers from Hebco and Becker. Snug fit, that took me less than 40 mins to install. If the rest of the accesories are as easy to slam on, then I can accesorize the bike untill I run out of money, or the otherwise sturdy frame collapses. Whichever comes first. If you visit offtheroad.de, remember to wear a bib and let the drooling commence. Kedo.de and touratech.com are some other good sites to visit regarding accesories.

Oops. This review got a bit longer than intended. Doing the nightshift here at work and bored out of my mind...hehe.

2007 xt review

All in all a good bike. No real bad points. Issues i have are as follows.
1. First gear to low, second gear could be lower.
2. I have a slight ticking / rattle noise from right side of engine. Spoke to dealer at first service who said this is just the characteristics of this engine ????????? but why was it not there for first two days, and worse when cold. Its Not a permanent rattle with thump of engine, just like having a half pack of tic tacs under the side casing !!!!
3. After short run to or from work rear brake ticking as cooling down for 5 mins ! whats this going to be like after a hard sunday morning blast ????
4. silver top vinyl section not as liked as the side black mesh material
5. Very very Heavy compared to drz sm and the ktm's
6.Engine and hand guard improves look, as do removing mirrors and fitting small show plate and chopping lower section of rear mud guard.

J_maker 22-07-07 16:08

hello stevej,
are you sure it is your rear brake ticking and not your exhausts??
sounds strange:eusa_think:

stevej 22-07-07 16:41

Yeah good point, Just been out and is definitly pipes. still ticking after 8 mins from switch off. only done 4 miles. Previously had blade and also have dr350, neither suffer from this. Never mind aye.

afk40 22-07-07 23:21

Stevej...ye mention about first an second gear....why dont ye lower the front sprocket to a 14T..you`ll love it an it will lower the gearing litterly right thru the box....depends what ye want tae do wi it....even a 13T ave never tried one on the xt but a bet it will be LOW...one tooth in the front less is like gaining 3 in the rear...I once had a 65 tooth sprocket on ma rear on a XLR250 Honda, it was hand made...when the original was 45...a wanted it to pull an perform like a Trials bike...an it did....45mph full whack ye go at walkin pace in 4th gear. an pull away in 3rd .....try the downsize on the sprocks///that may help ye.....John
