9000 mile review of XTR

Hi Guv,
Had my bike from new. Surging was the first thing that struck me - although I have resolved this problem by following advice on this forum and adjusting my CO setting (up 7 - now runs like a dream). Average mpg: commuting (16-miles each way on A-roads) is about 54. Recent tour (2,5000 miles) was getting high 50s and sometimes 65 mpg when on slow B-roads around Scotland. Although I must admit I enjoy letting rip - so mpg was never likely to be great. Original tyres were replaced at 6,000 miles (although they probably had another 1/1,500 in them), for a pair of BT45s.
I have replaced the original bars for a set of Maguras and fixed risers. I found the windblast at higher speeds was tiring and fitted an after-market Yamaha screen - works well. The bike is fitted with touractech frame to carry panniers. Engine crash bars fitted and large bashplate (aspirational as it has only seen tarmac so far, but one day...). The XTR is a really easy bike to live with, starts first time everyday, requires minimum of care and is plenty fast enough really - I am holding it back on the twisties.

Regards,
Tomo

As I've stated in other posts, I've killed 2 sat navs in 5 months and according to Garmin no other bike has done this. Not even a Hardley. This distruction process is totally to do with vibrations.

Oh, one other thing. I'm not the type of biker that raves about his bike trying to kid myself it's perfect. It is good but far from perfect.

HE HASN'T RIDDEN A DUCATI THEN! OH, HE IS A MECHANIC, HE MUST KNOW!

Hi all,

I am looking into buyin an XT660X 2008. Am I safe to presume the stalling and surging issue has been resolved in the 2008 models ? Surging concerns me a lot and I do not think I should have to tinker to resolve it. There are a couple for sale locally with only 2,000km on them, one would have to wonder why they were traded so early. Although it would be a couple of grand saving( Aussie $ ) but they would be 2006/2007 models, maybe with the surging issue. What are your guys thoughts ?

08 Xtr

Hi, I've got an 08 XTR.
A few things you should know before buying one.
1, The paint has started to come off the engine.Everyone has had this problem.
2,the fuel tank has started rusting around the supports on the frame.Have a good look before you buy.
3,The spokes have starting rusting.
4,Bad vibration through the bars at 70mph.
5,Driving below 30 mph is really bad, watch out on roundabout's in the wet.
6,Cuts out just when you dont want it to.
7,You will find random netural gears when changing gear.
8,The bolts on the engine have corroded
I'm a mechanic and wash the bike after i've used it,then give it a covering in wd40 when it's dry.
The bike has now covered just over 3000 miles from new.I've had a few bikes before and this is the worst build quality i've ever seen on a bike.
The good news is you can have a really good laugh on it.could do with a bit more grunt.
I've got CRD race cans and a K&N filter.

We do not have the corrosion problems in Australia that you have in the UK. I am on my second XTX with none of the above corrosion problems. I have had no gear box problem since bending my gear lever by 1/2 a spline down. The cutting can be fixed & surging addressed to a minimum. The vibration through the bars is a feature not a fault of this motor they all do it with no engine problems. Between my 2 XTX's I have done nearly 40000kms on them so think it is fair to comment. The XT is far from perfect, it is a fun bike.
