07 XT's owner reviews

http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...impfETnjqV.jpg

Hi guys, we are looking for reviews from owners of the new 2007 XT's

We need to know fuel consumption in normal use i.e. commuting, general riding etc. We also need to know your first impressions regarding the behaviour of these engines, i.e. if there are any apparent problems with surging, throttle response etc etc.

Thank you

p.s.: By the way that reg plate is presently available from DVLA at the cost of 580, bargain :D

Fozzer 14-05-07 12:35

well I'm not very good at this review business but tell you about my frist 200 miles.

the bike seems very hard to keep to 30 mph feels a little bit lumpy at 34 mph feels great.

it has cut out on me twice up to yet.

But I have never riden a big single before and coming from a super smooth GSXR this might be just me

on another point when I picked the bike up got told the usual take your time new tyres new engine blah blah. but 120 miles in the rear tyre is chewing nicely which says it all about the handling I think

As well grow together I will report further .

Harrisac 14-05-07 20:13

I have a new 07 (same colour as Fozzer) but to date I have had no problems with it cutting out or surging. Based on experience in this forum I have been expecting all sorts of problems so I have been pleasantly surprised.

Riding around town at 30mph is pretty smooth, though I normally keep it in 4th gear just in case some idiot does something stupid and I need quick acceleration.

The build quality seems good, and the engine does not have the black paint I was expecting - its more like polished metal than anything else so hopefully it will be more durable as I note that some of you have had paint flaking off here.

So, all in all, it looks like Yamaha have made some improvements for the better. If you have any specific questions let me know.

Good riding !

J_maker 14-05-07 21:16

hi fellows,
I have 1000 miles (1600 Km) so far on my 07XTX. It cut on me twice during the first days but I think it was just like... get to know your new bike. Especially after the first 600 miles and even more after the 800 miles, I just can't ride slow.:098:
The 07 is wild enough to keep you young >>> I am 36 and feel like 17 again when I bought a used XR 350R Honda --a kick ass bike at that time--:laughing6:
So, going fast and fueling works absolutely fine!
However I don't trust my tires as the rear one always dances like figure skating when I hit the brake even softly. When I accelerate --even smooth-- the rear of the bike goes dancing again like SM racing. Hmmmm ok, we have lousy roads here as well... not raugh tarmac but when I brake or accelerate, I'm in trouble. Even my front wheel sliped 2 days ago using the front brake rather hard..lucky me, I didn't fall! I can't wait to change tyres to the Avon ones. (I read great reviews on the forum)
The fuel consumption goes like... 230 Km with a full tank going smooth ... up to 100km/h (this is like 145 miles with a full tank going up to 60 mph).
Inside the town driving like you are free to enjoy your bike and all it's power.. it goes like 160 Km or 100 miles with a full tank. Mind that it is all stock; no mods at all.
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions from anyone that wants to buy the 07.
enjoy, J_maker

Had the 660x for around 3 months now and nearly a thousand miles in, the engine is loosening up nicely and tyres scrubbed to the edges, the biggest advantage as i see it of 2007 model is the Lamda sensor fitted in header, it allows all the air and pipe modding with no adjustment to fuelling, the sensor automatically adjust fuelling to suit.

nkunzi 21-05-07 21:05

Had my 660r for 5 weeks now I experianced the surging from day 1 but used the co mod and it improved drastically although not gone completely. I have put some free flow pipes on and removed the snorkle. Now this bike likes its rev limmiter even though its still so new it revs out much easier. Fuel wise i think its slightly better as well. This bike is just so easy to ride. Any ideas what to do with my standard pipes? NKUNZI

Tony660x 21-05-07 21:12

I would keep the standard pipes in a dry safe place so if you sell the bike you can return it to standard condition.

Got an 07 XTX 1st March, Blue one, a bit of a change from an R6.

Having lots of fun. I live near the Yorkshire Dales which suits this bike down to the ground.
Have done 2800 miles. Wore the back tyre (MTR02) out in 1200 this tyre suits this bike. Fitted a Diablo as a stop gap. not a good choice think it's a bit too hard. Going to try Dunlop Mutants.
The engine still surges at low speed, think it's the nature of the beast, light flywheel etc. Fitted a 14 tooth sprocket, lots, lots better. Also did the Kev mod which just about sorted it out totally (Just the variable resister part). Fuel consumption running in was 55 to the gallon 120ish to reserve. Normal running about 50 to the gal. Hard running 47. No oil used. First service was 32. Fitted bash plate and hand gaurds as well.
A roads fine, B roads a real hoot, Motorways ok but hard work over 80.
Fixtures, fittings and finish all ok. Having new cush rubbers on warranty there falling apart.

ManicMic 30-05-07 20:22

Hi deafblind and welcome to the forum.

I wanted an '07 XTX but my dealer told me there were non in the country in March and there wouldn't be any until May at the earliest. Are you sure it's the '07 model? Has it got a lambda sensor on the left hand side on your exhaust? I've heard reports of the '07 model doesn't surge. Also heard that some dealers are selling '06 bikes on 07 plates.

mark1968 30-05-07 20:29

Had mine a month. Went for the all black and it looks great. Only done 200 miles but the tyres are scrubbed to the edge and I've not had any issues yet. Fuelling seems fine and I like the fact that when I change the pipes I won't have to make any additional changes.

Changes to the swingarm, rear pegs and grab handles all look great and give the bike a slightly more up market look than before.

I can highly recommend CMC in Cannock for anyone interested.

deafblind 30-05-07 20:48

Hiya.
Definately an 07, Lambda sensor left pipe. Was lucky to get the bike and only in blue. My dealer said it was the only one he could get and may be June/July till the next ones. Apparently there's a bit of a shortage! Was in the dealers yesterday, still no X's but he has a couple of R's.

ManicMic 30-05-07 20:59

You are one lucky fella. That's just what I ordered but my dealer left it for 2 weeks to tell me that they couldn't get one. That was 2 days before the Easter holidays. I was not impressed with them one bit so I bought the '06 model instead with 800 off the recommended price.

June/July tallies up with what my dealer said so that's a first bit of truth for my dealer (I've been having tons of grief from them).

Glad your enjoying your XTX tyre eater and BTW it's not blue it's "racing blue".

They're faster than the rest. :devil[1]:(runs away before that bloke wiv da red one comes along).

Drew 3 30-05-07 22:20

Hi all, had my spanking new 07 XTX now for a few weeks. Only done 300 miles though. Had a bit of a serging issue with it so took it back to the dealer and had a word. Machanic was great, fiddled about with the mixture, test ride, fiddled a bit more, test ride etc. He made the mixture a bit richer and adjusted the TPS a touch (it was set on 11, now 15) and the bike runs just about perfect! Don't miss the XJR13 one bit, BIG smiles on every ride.:HappyRoll_ANPIUI:

There were 2 for sale in George White Shoreditch yesterday so... check with Yamaha UK Motors first, they should know which dealers has got them.

I know for a fact that Yamaha are stocking the more elite dealers like George White and Infinity and leaving the "lesser" or multi-brand dealers, with a longer waiting list.

And for heaven's sake guys, don't listen to the salesman talk, you might get more sense out of a stone, forget the monkey and ask to speak to the organ grinder instead!!! :D

Hi all...

Just been in to my local Yamaha dealer Keith Dixon's, Accrington, Lancs.
He has just got one Orange and one Blue XTX in the showroom. Just arrived. He told me they would probably be the last he would be getting this year. So if you want an XTX perhaps its best not to wait to long and visit your local dealer.

Am off out for a ride over the Trough of Bowland.

Still enjoying my 07 XTX no problems 3000 miles now.

McThor 27-06-07 00:45

My 2 cents

I've had my XTR for about a month now. It is bought with the intention to drive from Denmark to South Africa primo November. So a lot of extras will be fitted in the not so distant future. I'll be sure to review those when I get them.

I've done about 1100km now. Most of those done on a 3 day camping and fieldtesting trip in my holiday. Including red-light chasing, minor offroading, highway traveling and some rural freeway thumping, I've been getting 19.1km/l. Keep in mind that this is with 2x43l fully loaded alu panniers, a fully packed matilda pack on the back rack, and a 100kg danish motorcyclist. Can't realy complain about the km's/l on that. For local commute and day to day use, the 15l tank is adequate. But for the "authentic go anywhere, anytime bike" that Yamaha claims, 15l is cutting it a little too slim, imho.

The bike is fairly light and the rider sits quite high. I'm 1,84m and cannot flatfoot the ground. In strong winds and open highways, it can be quite a handfull to keep a straight trajectory. Especially when overtaking trucks, you realy need to run a tight ship and pay attention. It's not a big problem, but comming from a heavier bike, it is certainly something that I've noticed.

Which brings me to the windshield. Or lack thereof. At high speeds, the fact that you catch the winds square in the chest ,is very pronounced. It puts strain on your lower back and/or your hands, depending on your ridingstyle. You either have to lean into the wind (strains lower back), or sit relaxed back and then hold on with your hands. Pretty soon they'll become white and numb. I interchanged between the two styles during my trip when I was riding on highway. To me, an extended windshield is definately on the "must get" list.

I have not personally experienced any cutouts og engine stalls. Low revs or high. To be honest, if I hadn't read about it on this forum, I would have thought it was malicious slander from Yamaha's competitors. The engine runs surprisingly smooth for a singlestroke and is as responsive in towntraffic, as it is quick on the highway. The gearchange works surely and efficiently. You are never in doubt if your gearchange was succesfull. Neutral is easy to find from both 1'st and 2'nd gear and the gearbox is forgiving enough should you overtap it. But without being an annoyance between gearshifts from 1'st to 2'nd. I did get a chance to drive in some heavy sand at the westcoast even though I haven't fitted knobblies for the job yet. Despite the stock street tyres it actually performed ok. I feel confident that it will perfom with excellence once I get "propper" tyres fitted. The low clearence due to the underfitted dual exhausts, is not going to be a huge problem unless you are realy into some serious offroad. A decent bashplate should see you through common occuring offroad conditions without too much trouble. During my short offroad/sanddune testing, the engine never missed a step, and seemed to thump happily in the frame no matter how I punished it. It was like it was saying "yeah, I'm used to work for a living. Do your worst, mate!". How it will hold up in an extended trial (such as a trip across Africa), only time will tell. But it's performance during my short 3 day trial, leaves me with a good feeling in my gut. For very heavy extended offroad it may pay off to take off a tooth or two from the drive sprocket. But personally the gearing suits me fine for my purpose.

I was never a big fan of digital LCD displays. Guess I'm kind of oldfashioned that way. Digital display can't be read out of the corner of your eye. You have to look straight at it. Having said that, the display on the XTR is easy to read at even the most casual glance and you quickly get used to it. The light is a pleasant green-ish teint that supplies sufficient light, without becomming a glare and an eyecatcher to distract you.

Warning lights, turnsignal lights, N lamp, seem puny and small at first glance. But they supply surprisingly bright light that does catch your eye. I've not yet forgotten to turn off the turnsignal. Maybe it's just me, but the reservetankt light seems even more powerfull than the rest. I was definately not in doubt when it came on. Pretty nifty thing that the secondary trip resets by itself when that happens. Alzheimers is catching up with me, and now I don't have to remember at what trip the light came on :).

As far as accesories go, there is simply too much out there to even begin reviewing it in a single thread. But let me just mention the rack and panniers from Hebco and Becker. Snug fit, that took me less than 40 mins to install. If the rest of the accesories are as easy to slam on, then I can accesorize the bike untill I run out of money, or the otherwise sturdy frame collapses. Whichever comes first. If you visit offtheroad.de, remember to wear a bib and let the drooling commence. Kedo.de and touratech.com are some other good sites to visit regarding accesories.

Oops. This review got a bit longer than intended. Doing the nightshift here at work and bored out of my mind...hehe.

2007 xt review

All in all a good bike. No real bad points. Issues i have are as follows.
1. First gear to low, second gear could be lower.
2. I have a slight ticking / rattle noise from right side of engine. Spoke to dealer at first service who said this is just the characteristics of this engine ????????? but why was it not there for first two days, and worse when cold. Its Not a permanent rattle with thump of engine, just like having a half pack of tic tacs under the side casing !!!!
3. After short run to or from work rear brake ticking as cooling down for 5 mins ! whats this going to be like after a hard sunday morning blast ????
4. silver top vinyl section not as liked as the side black mesh material
5. Very very Heavy compared to drz sm and the ktm's
6.Engine and hand guard improves look, as do removing mirrors and fitting small show plate and chopping lower section of rear mud guard.

J_maker 22-07-07 16:08

hello stevej,
are you sure it is your rear brake ticking and not your exhausts??
sounds strange:eusa_think:

stevej 22-07-07 16:41

Yeah good point, Just been out and is definitly pipes. still ticking after 8 mins from switch off. only done 4 miles. Previously had blade and also have dr350, neither suffer from this. Never mind aye.

afk40 22-07-07 23:21

Stevej...ye mention about first an second gear....why dont ye lower the front sprocket to a 14T..you`ll love it an it will lower the gearing litterly right thru the box....depends what ye want tae do wi it....even a 13T ave never tried one on the xt but a bet it will be LOW...one tooth in the front less is like gaining 3 in the rear...I once had a 65 tooth sprocket on ma rear on a XLR250 Honda, it was hand made...when the original was 45...a wanted it to pull an perform like a Trials bike...an it did....45mph full whack ye go at walkin pace in 4th gear. an pull away in 3rd .....try the downsize on the sprocks///that may help ye.....John

hi guys
Had my new xtx 07 now for a week done just over 350 miles had no problems at all, she cut out on me once but it could have been me and not the bike very surprised not to have any surging problems the only problem i have is i never want to stop riding it. thank you yamaha for a great bike wot fun
shayne

keithxt 20-09-07 17:53

more than pleased

 I've now had my 07 model for 3 weeks and have covered just under 1000 miles. Most on A roads and motorway. I've had an average of 60 mpg doing around 75 mph.

I haven't had it cut out on me but do find it slightly jerky at slow speeds. It could be me as i've come from a GSX 1100 and am finding you have to work the gear box to get the most out of the engine.

I have no complants about the handling expecially on B roads!

Great bike so far.

Do you mean K&N filter - if so no problem at all. Add a D.N.A. stage II filter to make a LOT of difference.

Check HERE for mods.

XT660Z tenere

Hi I am a newbie to the site...
Thinking of going from a KTM 640 Adventure to a XT660Z Tenere. Offroad on the KTM is fantastic, but long hauls on the road is a buzzing nightmare!!!
So I am really interested to know what the '07 660 is like at m-way speeds on long hauls? Is it a tingling nightmare that makes you want to stop after one hour, or are full tank stetches no issue. Any advice & comments would be great.
Cheers

5500 miles since march 07,three rear tyres ,500-1000 miles left in front.
Fuel - general riding 100 miles to reserve.
Used clutch to smooth out surging but nowadays dont notice it.
Been late a few times and had it flat out for a few motorway hours and still not topped up with oil.
Took pillion footrest off, toolkit and handrails about 6lbs lighter.
Up graded fork oil and dropped fork legs 15mm otherwise standard.Front brake great handles fine, just lacks a little power but for the money its spot on .cheers johnno

If you must fit aftermarkets then keep hold of the old pipes as no one wants the original pipes anyway, if youre looking for power mods then buy a dynojet power comander and a DNA stage2 filter for the cheapest boost (around 3 or four smooth bhp).

Hi, have now done over 2000km with my XTR still stock standard, no cutting out or low speed surge, all on tar roads, get 20 -25km/l, 160 km/hr indicated easily before it starts to weave, altogether a great package, can't wait to try it on some gravel.
