95% of the time you can see if they are on there way out or have a fault, by a burning or blacking of the copper wire or a brake in the wire. But burning is most common.

I have only just spotted this thread so can I offer this as a guide for the checking of a charging circuit.
I d/loaded it when my brother had problems and as a spark myself I thought it made the testing of the circuitry easy.

Update, after a week of commuting (100+ miles) the xtx is running great. I was worried about the width and weight for zipping through traffic compared to my vespa but it has no trouble flying through. Thanks again for all your help :)

Good to hear you got sorted.
After reading about your problem you've inspired me to order a spare rectifier for my travels this year,just incase. At only �13 its worth having one handy as I previously owned Honda's which were notorious for wrecking rectifiers and leaving folk stranded.
