New xtx fail

Hello, thanks for the ad. I’ve just bought my first bike which happens to be an xt660x, always like the look of them. I’ve been riding Vespas and lambrettas since I was 16. (Now 45😑) but the commute from witney to Oxford I do everyday is getting tiresome on my scoots with small fuel tank , large potholes and ever busy traffic. So...... on Sunday I take my 06 xtx out for a pre commute ride. Disaster after 4/5 miles.. red light comes on then after 1/4 mile the bike dies. Luckily near a pub🙂. So I have a cup of tea and have a think . Right... my better half brings out a new battery, bike fires into life and get home. I put a test on battery terminals on tick over ( and low revs)and it stays at 12v so it’s not charging🙁. Do test on regulator =seems fine. Must be stator????? Any help: advice would be appreciated........ cheers Barney.

Hi and Welcome...not that good a start to XT ownership but its all part of the 'getting to know you' phase init..

How low is your tickover?..1450/1500 is the advised tickover.

Has the bike died again since your initial ride?..I know your using a new battery..

David Barnett 31-01-18 14:08

Hi, and cheers for the quick response. Yes the same problem with new battery... red light comes on and bike dies after a further quarter of a mile. Latest up date is a used stator arrived in the post this morning ( from previous owner)🙂. I would like to check that stator before I fit . Does anyone know what the readings should be? Cheers again Barney.

supatrig 31-01-18 16:33

Welcome mate. I'm an ex scooter boy!

David Barnett 31-01-18 17:07

Cheers supatrig. I was hoping for a little less tinkering than with the scoots but Im still wrestling around the garage floor atm🤪

nikroc 31-01-18 17:14

Have you spoken to the person who sold the vehicle to you?..I ask as they might be able to identify any issues..

I don't see how you can test the part unless its connected to the bike tbh..

whats a stator btw?..

Copied from the workshop manual:

Stator coil resistance 0.224-0.336 ohms @ 20 degrees C

Battery charging voltage should be 14.0v @ 5,000 rpm.

I'd recommend getting a manual, I think you can still get a free download on the forum.

Welcome to the club!

just looked it up for you in my manual :
stator coil resistance (at 20C = 38F) 0.224 - 0336 Ohm

nikroc 31-01-18 18:38

So...we have a new bike, with an unknown tickover speed that's had a new battery as the old one failed..

The original system was tested at tick over speed,we now know that at 5k rev's the system should be pushing 14 volts out....

I would suggest putting the original battery back in and trying again at 5k rev's?..that's assuming its been fully recharged and is confirmed to be holding a charge.

David Barnett 31-01-18 20:32

Again thanks all for replys and taking the time to look for info. Im not sure of tick over speed tbh ( sounded quite normal if that helps😑) I just blipped throttle a few times and voltage regulator didnt rise. The bike has the stator cover off atm and waiting for gasket to arrive so cant run . Fingers crossed this used stator is ok. Where is a good place to buy new / used spares. Cheers Barney.

hannesd 31-01-18 21:15

did you ever check all of the fuses? just to be sure...follow the wiring from stator to the battery...emiminate as many other possible faults before investing in parts...

CaptMoto 01-02-18 07:58

:hello: and :welcome: to :660:

David Barnett 01-02-18 11:12

Yeah I checked fuses. Cheers for reply 👍

nikroc 01-02-18 11:21

Have you checked the old system at 5k rev's?..is your old battery holding a charge?..what did the vendor say about the issue?..

David Barnett 01-02-18 14:26

To be honest Im not sure it was 5k revs when I tested old system, I just revved it a few times and the volt meter didnt rise. Both batteries are new so Im assuming they are ok . Ive been in touch with the ( private) seller who has sent me a stator. Cheers Barney

nikroc 01-02-18 14:30

ok..are you planning on trying the old stator test?..ie hold revs at 5k and test for voltage increase..

I would have thought your reg/recifier could be the issue tbh..

Chalk Two 01-02-18 17:49

+1 on the rectifier failing, especially if your headlight bulb has blown and you haven't noticed that yet.

David Barnett 02-02-18 23:11

Think it is the regulator/ rectifier lads. Fitted different stator and no change. Any body got one for sale?

nikroc 03-02-18 10:15

Have tested the current one??(no pun intended).

Get the part numbers and do an ebay search..a few on second hand and a lot new.

Upon reading your post it reminded me of previous hondas I have owned and their tendency to lunch a rectifier so I also had a look with the idea of getting a spare, just in case. I've a 2011 xtz and it looks the same as the xtz/xtr one which also looks the same as other yamaha model, like the r6 and r1, but is listed on ebay sightly differently, looks like wider pins.

Think I'll take a punt on one of these and test it upon arrival.

David Barnett 03-02-18 15:06

Cheers again for help lads. I’ve done the test with the volt meter again with no rise in voltage when a rise in revs. Also a test with regulator taken off bike following instructions from a YouTube video , that showed it was ok.I’m hoping I’ve followed the instructions wrong in the video tbh . I’m picking up a regulator in a bit from a local bike breaker. Fingers crossed.

David Barnett 03-02-18 22:22

Wrong one ffs. Ordered one off Ebay .

can you try one from a fellow yamaha rider? just to test?

David Barnett 04-02-18 17:15

My mates ride Vespa or lambrettas, I havent told them Ive gone to the dark side yet:)

David Barnett 12-02-18 13:35

Success....... changed the regulator and bingo . Thanks for all your help

nikroc 12-02-18 13:56

Well done...now sell the stator you bought and have FUN!!

englishbandit 12-02-18 16:11

If it was your regulator/ rectifier that was the problem. Then more than likely your stator is on its way out. When the stator is on its way out it blows the regulator/rectifiers. Its very common on the Honda bikes. ( I deal in cbr 929) 9 times out of 10 when the regulator/rectifier go’s its down to the stator. I come across it a lot. And if the stator is damaged ( you may not see the damage) or on its way out it will just blow the new regulator/ rectifier , might take a day, a week might take 2 months But there is a good chance it will blow it again

David Barnett 12-02-18 18:28

Good to know. Cheers

englishbandit 12-02-18 19:26

It’s very very common. I even bought a bike of a lad that had 3 rectifiers go down in a month so sold the bike cheap as he had had enough with the bike. I checked the stator after I bought the bike. And stator was on its way out ( black burning on the copper wire) changed that job done. Then sold bike for 1000 profit . And I have had myself a cbr 900,hornet 600 and 2 cbr 929 all go down with this problem. And have sorted out several other 929/954 owner that had same problem and did not know what it was. It’s that common on the Honda. I know of one or two people that tour carry a spare stator/rectifier under there seat when touring

nikroc 12-02-18 19:33

Lets hope that the replacement stator that was fitted is ok.

Enjoy the bike..ride=smiles!

englishbandit 12-02-18 21:30

95% of the time you can see if they are on there way out or have a fault, by a burning or blacking of the copper wire or a brake in the wire. But burning is most common.

I have only just spotted this thread so can I offer this as a guide for the checking of a charging circuit.
I d/loaded it when my brother had problems and as a spark myself I thought it made the testing of the circuitry easy.

Update, after a week of commuting (100+ miles) the xtx is running great. I was worried about the width and weight for zipping through traffic compared to my vespa but it has no trouble flying through. Thanks again for all your help :)

nikroc 25-02-18 09:11

Good news..I hope your enjoying the extra smiles per miles as .well

Good to hear you got sorted.
After reading about your problem you've inspired me to order a spare rectifier for my travels this year, just incase. At only 13 its worth having one handy as I previously owned Honda's which were notorious for wrecking rectifiers and leaving folk stranded.

Good idea to carry a spare from now on. :)
