thing is as i was putting panels back on the bike I noticed the paint looks good but just flakes off !

I didnt use a primer and now I guess I probably should have, ah well live and learn !

now its all black I am looking and actually thinking I may go for a different colour I like the red bikes with black panels so maybe black bike with red panels ?

I've been thinking the same thing. I've got a black one and painting the panels black as well seems a bit... dull. Too safe.. So, perhaps red is the way to go? Yellow would probably also be pretty cool, but would remind me too much of the F800GS.

Be sure to post some pics if you paint them red!

Doesn't really look like an 800GS...

yeah will post some pics wish it was easier to so mine never seem to work no matter what site I use

like the yellow also nice and safe be seen

did consider hi vis green (MONster energy)

found some interesting stone effect paint and chrome ! i thought that may look too judge dredd

i think orange would attract the wrong crowd lol

even tried spraying the grey panels through a mesh so that it had a carbon effect

yeah i think all black is smart but there is a wedge of body work and its better broken up

I guess the nice thing is it doesnt take long to remove the panels so playing with colours aint so bad unless someone could do a photoshop tenere where we could all play at our own colours

Any tips before painting those gray plastic covers would have been great!

1. Did you sand paper the surface before applying any colour?
2. Any primers?
3. Do you have any clear lacquer on top of it?

The grey plastic is a very 'waxy' sort of polythene material (similar to self-coloured MX bike panels), and paint doesn't like sticking to that at all...

With my bike we sanded the texture flat too (as I wanted a smooth finish), but at the very least you will need to key the plastic quite aggressively with a course sandpaper, then use a good layer of filer/plastic primer before applying the top coat.

The paintshop that did mine originally said afterwards it took a lot more work than they envisaged to get the paint to adhere properly, but then end result was worth it:

That said, if you drop the bike, the paint is going to chip off the tank panels anyway...

Perhaps paint the tank and headlight surround grey instead - like a battleship!
