Not that it's of much interest outside Australia... I use Penrite Sin 5, which is Japanese-MA-rated (suitable for motorcycles), fully synthetic 5W-60. I used this stuff by accident when I bought some for my car, then was advised by Penrite to use a different grade.

I then used the Sin 5 in my work TTR250, initially so I didn't waste it. It turned out that it stood up to extreme use amazingly well, with excellent clutch engagement and good gear shifting even on days up to 49degC. It lasted without noticeable degradation of either benchmark for the full 1000km service interval, which doesn't sound much. But it is, and by that time, every other oil I'd tried, including dedicated motorycle oils, generally showed degradation by chattering clutch engagement and increasingly sticky shifting.

So the Tenere has it too, and I hope it works as competently in it as it does in the big-block :laughing11: 250! Just my 20c...

I suppose the 5w isn't going to cause too much drama in a low revving single.. but I'd be sticking to the recommended grade oil IMO..

and why on earth use a full synth oil if you are going to replace it after just 1000km's ??

Today, almost every OIL especified for bikes is good enough for the ten, IMHO it is much more important to warm -and I mean really warm- the bike before riding it and change the oil every 5 or 6000km, you don't have to worry about brands or types.

There is no OIL able to lubricate your bike when cold, and even the best "full ester" OIL will become degraded after 10000km. the transmition gears simply "break" the ester molecules, and the clutch -especially offroad- burn the oil much faster than the engine itself.

FYI, I do use Motul 5100, a pretty good semi OIL, the main reason is that I got it pretty cheap, otherwise I would use a Wallmart/Carrefour cheapo OIL, they are as good as any brand under normal conditions and frequent changes.

have fun,

j.

I'm not. At least in the Tenere. But in my 250, a mustering bike, the oil is changed about every 50 hours, or 1000km average. Slow, hot work, a lot of clutch action in harsh conditions flogs any oil. That's why on earth.

The 5W when the motor is cold isn't a drama imo - the oil is still much thicker at startup than it is at operating temperature no matter what. And the Penrite I use is, as I said, an MA-rated oil, so it meets the requirements for the Tenere.

I tend to agree that any good MA oil is good enough for the 660. I just prefer to use an oil I've proved to work for me.

Just got back from my 4000 mile service. I got home from a 20min ride, turned the engine off, had a fag and then checked the dip stick. It read empty?!? I know you should run it for 10 mins then check the dip stick so Im wondering if the cigarette I had would of been enough time to reduce the pressure enough for the dipstick to register Empty? I feel a bit of a fool to phone the dealer and ask if the had defo put oil in it. Im going to check it tomorrow from cold with a 10 min tick over first.
Im sure in the past whenever I checked the dipstick it always read Full or near ass however hot or cold the engine was??

Hi Jimmy - as I recall, you are meant to check the oil with a warm engine, straight after you switch the engine off. Unscrew the dip stick, wipe it, reinsert but don't screw it down (yeah yeah, stop sniggering at the back), and pull it out and read the level...

Dealers are notorious for putting exactly what the workshop manual says is the correct volume, and call it good... you might find it's a few ml down from the top of the dipstick, but it's more likely you left it too long before checking...
