I agree with KLR, if your decision is based on price & you want a faster XT, the Stage 3 Air Box will out perform any after market exhaust on a XT660.

Add the stage 3 air box with after market Can's & definitely a Power Commander, you would make any XT owner smile.

Let us know how she goes Paul?

Have been for a bit of a ride and WOW it pulls alot better the bike is totally different and the induction roar sound great this is a must have mod

driesie 22-11-09 21:45

Sounds really exciting!
Couple of questions though. Would it be "safe" to install this mod on a bike with a engine that's done over 20k of (hard) miles? I'm a bit worried about spending much and having the engine go bang shortly after.
Also, how long approx would a competent mechanic in a shop need to fit one of these? There's no way I could fit one myself.

CaptMoto 22-11-09 22:15

Answer 1: not a problem to fit to a 20k bike
Answer 2: Kev is only a phonecall away and he is willing to help any mechanic with fitting assistance and we have a full set up instruction from him already. A proper mechanic will do that in one hour flat.

Go for it mate

It will work no problems on your bike.

As Paul mentioned it changes the way the XT accelerates, my god does mine pull hard now from nothing all the way up the rpm range.

I finally got the stage 3 tested today with positive results. All tests carried out are on the same same dyno at different dates.

Today’s results, standard XT660X, Stage 3 Air Box, Power Commander, Carbon Can Exhausts with baffles in.

One thing to remember all Dyno's read differently that is why I always do a before run to compare the gains, the actual HP is not of any concern to me but the gains from a before & after run is what I am after.

Sheet 1 shows a 7.2HP, 6.13 FT/LBS gain over my standard XT660.
Sheet 2 shows the gains at 7200 RPM between a standard XT660 & the stage 3 air box.
Sheet 3 shows, green line stage 3 air box, blue line stage 1 & 2 DNA filters with snorkel removed, red line standard XT660.

I would like to thank Dino from DNA for allowing me to independently test the stage 3 air box, as the dyno results show it is the best air intake filter mod we have for the XT660X/R.

For the new members to the forum, you might not be aware that Dino is offering these air boxes at a discounted price to forum members, if anyone wants to order one please contact myself or CaptMoto to get your discount.

Kev, what's the reason for the low intial power of the Red trace? Is the std configuration that bad or just how the dyno operator brought the engine on load?

You are correct, it is how the bike was loaded by the operator when he pushed the start button. The Red Dyno run was started at around 3600rpm the others were started from around 2900rpm. I would read the Dyno runs from around 3800rpm. The 3 Dyno runs were taken on different days using the same Dyno.

Great results Kev and Dino.

What size outlets did the exhaust system have? With more air going in, you might find that quite insert will rob some horsepower.

I happy with the results.

My CCC baffles are 32mm outlets, I did run tests 2 years ago & got a gain of 1.3hp at peak with the baffles out with the stage 1 & 2 filters, with a cleaned upped map to see what it made at peak HP, the only problem they are just to loud for me.
