DNA Stage 3 Air Box

This news is so important that it has been posted here.

I have just received an email from Dino Nikolaidis, MD of DNA Filters http://f286.mail.yahoo.com/ya/downlo...Inbox&inline=1 he has now informed me that a stage 3 filter for the XT660X / XT660R is finally in production and will be available for sale soon, also I am waiting to receive pics and installation method together with the relevant test charts however I can anticipate that according to the initial findings Dino has announced an increase of airflow of 40% over a competely open airbox without filters!! Which means this will signify the best optimum a/f for the XTX/XTR bikes which have so far suffered from a restricted air intake from factory.

Please also notice that the first producton Stage 3 filter will be sent to Kev in Australia for test who will then fill us in with his results.

I am vey exciited about this news and I am eagerly awaiting for these to reach you all.

Well done Dino and DNA for your excellent service and dedication. We have been asking him to make a Stage 3 filter for some time and now what was our dream is about to become reality.

I have PMed Dino a while back and also asked via the forum about the stage3 for the Tenere but I have not had any reply ?

CaptMoto 05-10-09 14:39

Hi Ricky, the Tenere stage 3 is also being planned for production, it will be a totally different filter and airbox combination to that of the XTX/XTR, rest assured Dino is working on it, and soon as I know you will all know too.

DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit for the XTX/R

Hi to all the forum members,
I am very happy to announce that at last we have completed a very difficult project the XT 660 X/R DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit
At the beginning we thought that the project would be rather simple..! but it was a pain in the..! Almost 5 months, but we believe that the result will satisfy even the most demanding XT 660 owner.
The specifications of the DNA S3 are as following:

1. Complete DNA custom air box that houses 4 DNA filters.
We followed this route to separate the engines intake air, necessary for the engine to run, from the crankcase vent, the idle circuit and the AIS system.

2. The main DNA filter is a custom purpose designed elliptical DNA clamp on filter, with a built in venturi and a flow rate of 148,2 CFM @ 1,5 INCHES OF WATER and filtering efficiency of 98% minimum.

3. The 3 other small filters are standard elliptical DNA crank case vent filters.

4. The rubber intake features a unique design with a large built in radius, a conical profile and will fit any Throttle body from 48-53mm internal diameter. Additionally the Banana shape does not disturb the flow and positions the filter in the right place.

5. The air box is designed to accept the battery, the ECU and all the electrical parts that bolt on the stock air box.
Additionally it will accept the mud guard underneath and it will also have a chain oil and dirt guard on the left, to keep things clean and tidy.

6. The side covers are both laser cut, both have openings, also the left one with all the electronics.
The top has a massive opening to support the air flow and also allow the owner to view the filter and its condition.
The main filter can be serviced from the right side and following our calculations it would need cleaning every 20.000-30.000 km depending on the environment the bike is used, to keep the air flow always the maximum.

7. The AIR FLOW..
As all of you already know:
a) Test 1:
Air box & std filter & snorkel
46.53 CFM (1318 lit/min) VE=0.539
b) Test 2:
Air box & K&N filter & snorkel
52.51 CFM (1486 lit/min) VE=0.608
c) Test 3:
Air box & DNA filter & snorkel
57.19 CFM (1619 lit/min) VE=0.663
d) Test 4:
Air box & DNA filter & Without snorkel
59.52 CFM (1685 lit/min) VE=0.690
e) Test 5:
Air box & DNA filter & DNA Stage 2 filter & snorkel
79.19 CFM (2242 lit/min) VE=0.918
f) Test 6:
Air box & DNA filter & DNA Stage 2 filter Without snorkel
79.89 CFM (2262 lit/min) VE=0.926
g) Test 7:
Air box all open Without filters, side cover, snorkel
(this test is for reference only the bike cant be used on the road in this state)
88.6 CFM (2509 lit/min) VE=1.027
h) Test 8:
DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit AK-Y6E07-S3
111.9CFM @ 1.5 Inches of water
This result is filtered clean air! And if we compare it with the Test 6
The very popular DNA stage 1+2 application & No snorkle
we have +40% increase in air flow..!!!!!!!:winner:
If we compare it with Test 7 (no filters or side covers, air is NOT filtered,
the stock air box cannot be used in such a form)
we have +26.3% increase in air flow.

During this week we will complete all the parts in production form and I will post more information and photos.

I would like to thank all the forum members for keeping us motivated and any questions that you would have, I would be delighted to answer.

And not to forget we are already designing a DNA Stage - 3 Air Box Kit for the XT 660 Z 08-09 that will take care of many problems and flow issues related with the stock air box!

Best regards to all of you and please accept my apologies for not being on the forum lately, as we have so many projects running.

Cheers :icon_thumright: thats gona be a costly mod then that will wont a P.C to get the fueling right.

Paul Curtis 29-10-09 19:44

Any more news on the stage 3 please??

CaptMoto 29-10-09 20:25

We are not holding any news from you guys and as soon as DNA confirms availabilty and price to us we won't delay in making it public.

Meantime please understand that one of these has been sent to Kev in Australia for him to fit and take to the Dynometer to test and obtain dyno chart results so that everyone who will want to buy these Stage 3 filter will know exactly what to expect in power figures well documented by the expert who is Kev.

It goes without saying that I expect the cost of these filters to be not exactly cheap although nothing has been confirmed to me in writing from DNA but I have told Dino that the best thing to do before making a final announcement will be to at least provide concrete evidence of the benefit obtained by this filter and tested by an independent 3rd party, in this case Kev so that we will all know where we stand in anticipation.

Thanks for being patient

Paul Curtis 29-10-09 20:43

Thanks Capt
I to am not expecting them to be cheap but if it gives me 3 or 4 more hp i will be happy to spend the cash (but not to much please Dino)

DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit for the XTX/R

Hi Guys,
Today we tested the first tuned XT 660 on the dyno, the result was very Good!
We mapped the bike using Dynojet tuning link and the data we used to fix the air/fuel ratio was unbelievable:headbang:the next step is to install the stage 3 in a stock XT 660 with stock exhaust, this test will take place on Saturday 31/10.
On Monday afternoon we hope to be able to announce it officially, including photos and pricing.

Please be patient we are working very hard to offer to all of you that will choose to purchase the DNA S3 the absolute best kit available on the market!

I would like to thank all of you for your interest,

Best Regards

Dino Nikolaidis

Paul Curtis 30-10-09 00:31

Thanks for the reply Dino i look forward to seeing the results :respeck:

Kev 30-10-09 01:15

Guys there is quite a bit of work going on behind the scenes by DNA, they have tested the stage 3 on a modified XT & will also run dyno tests on a standard XT as well. I should have mine to test soon, I will run it on the dyno & post the results as a third party tester.

With any performance mod one needs to prove the gains, this is what is happening at the moment, so not much longer to wait.

The DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit first results!

9 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,
Saturday evening I am back home after a busy and noisy day on the dyno!
Today we completed all the final tests concerning the DNA stage 3, we already had tested a modified XT 660 X (RAPTOR CYLINDER, PISTON & CAM) on Thursday,
so we expected good results with the stock bike also.
The DNA Stage 3 Air Box Kit is designed to be used on highly tuned bikes that need a high flow of air; but what happens if we use it on a stock bike with a stock exhaust?
Can we offer it as a single choice for customers that will choose to stay with the stock exhaust and want to increase the power and torque of their bike?
If afterwards an open exhaust is added what is the result?
I hope the following presentation will answer all the above and more, for all of you that are considering the DNA S3.
The workflow:
a) The stock bike is tested on the dyno to achieve all the base readings, Power-Torque-A/F Ratio.
b) The stock air box removed and the DNA S3 installed.
c) The bike now is tested with ONLY the DNA S3 no fueling modifications.
d) At this point we add a PC3 USB and map it using Dynojet Tuning Link and dyno the bike again to see the result.
e) Now we install a set of Akrapovic Open Slip Ons and dyno the bike again..?
Attached you can find the Power and Torque graphs.
Photos of the bike on the dyno and the DNA S3.
YouTube links with videos.

a) ALL STOCK XT 660 X
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3zMVZf65v0
b) STOCK XT 660 X & ONLY THE DNA S3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBS4HbZX3Rc
c) XT 660 X DNA S3 & PC3 & T2NE MAPPING & AKRAPOVIC EX
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsGZ1rylx3k

Note: that the S3 we tested was missing the side covers, but it makes no difference because the side covers are completely open (perforated) to allow the air to flow unrestricted.

Photos of the complete kit ready to ship and pricing, hopefully, we will post on Monday or Tuesday as we are still waiting some parts to come in from the powder coating.

At this point I will not add any comments or explanations, instead I expect you to send me your comments and opinion.

Thank you all again for keeping us motivated, with your interest.

Best regards,

Looks good to me mate :thumbsup[1]:

Are you going to have to emboss or print with "For Race Use Only" as per some pathetic EU regulations or will it be legend-free (except for your logos of course)?

A big thank you from me and I am sure from many forum members for all your hard work and development for a relatively small market (at the moment). With the addition of a re-worked throttle body, drop-in high compression piston & maybe cam and PCv and tuning I think you may be close to the ultimate XT660 engine without significant and costly engineering work to increase capacity.

ps. Will you include the PCiii map with the device or donate it to the site via Kev - PLEASE?

No disrespect to Kev intended - he is a brilliant and talented engineer who has the skills and workshop facilities to do anything he wants to in order to change the original to match his needs from the bike. The rest of us have either to pay someone else to do the work or - as I do - make do with diy tools to try to achieve the best we can. If the Stage three DNA is under 200 I shall order it straight away and fit it with my +3mm throttle body as soon as I have put my Merc back on the road (my bike is currently my only legal transport).

This will obviously need further work as the maps available will not match my set-up but I am considering if it may be possible to drill and tap my exhaust to fit the wideband sensor to use the PCv or if that is not possible to make the best of my PCiii.

So many possibilities and so much fun to be had fettling!

I love this XT660. :luv[1]:

shards 01-11-09 01:28

Five extra hp by just bolting on a new filter!! Sign me up!! I'm not sure what the majority culture is with their XT660's but I doubt any "speed freaks" buy one and, to get that type of improvement, is just what is needed.

Kev 01-11-09 06:26

Nice gains there Dino.

How much HP did the modified XT700 make? I would expect an even bigger gain with a +2mm or +3mm throttle body on it. With this type of mod the more engine modifications you have, the bigger the HP gain will be had from the stage 3 air box mod, then running a stage 1 & 2 filter on a standard air box.

A few questions, have you made provisions on the new air box to mount the rectifier & starter solenoid, as I can not see where they are to be fitted on the new air box. I also see you have removed the boost bottle on the intake pipe at the throttle body.

On my bike as a 660cc with the same set up using the stage 1 & 2 filters, I got 4.69HP gain, so the stage 3 mod adds approx an extra 2.31HP, showing a 7HP gain. It's going to be good to see the gains on my bike under the same test conditions, comparing the stage 1 & 2 filters directly to the stage 3 air box mod on the dyno.

About the filter?

Does it make any change in power or throttle respons if i switcht from a original to a DNA filter on a original xt660x 07' bike?
I have almost non experience with engines and stuff ;)

Looking at the dyno charts, if the stage 3 is the only mod fitted, the gain will be from 3500RPM all the way to read line.

If a PCIII is fitted + custom fuel map with the stage 3 air box, the gains are as soon as you open the throttle all the way to the red line. The more mods you add to the set up the greater the HP & torque.

Paul Curtis 01-11-09 13:06

Looks like the next must have mod good power + torque gains just hope it doesn't have NOT FOR ROAD USE on it

Dear motonacio,
Thank you for your kind comments, unfortunately due to the EU regulations we have to emboss, for race use only, but it will be difficult to spot it without removing the complete unit! So dont worry.
The XT 660 gets better the more you add and this new DNA S3 kit will NOT restrict the air flow regardless your mods.
Each DNA S3 kit will come ready to install and use; this means you will get all the hardware necessary and Dynojet PC3 & PCV MAPS for stock and race slip ons.
If you are using a bigger throttle body or you want to fine tune your PC to suit better your mods and local weather conditions, it will be necessary to custom map your PC using Dynojet tuning link.

I hope the above helps,

Best regards,

Dino

Hi Kev,
The XT 700 made around 60 ps with a stock throttle body and then we found that the clutch was slipping progressively starting at around 4000 rpm..! so we had to stop and now we are waiting for the replacement parts.
I am sure it can pump out another 5-6 ponies with a +2 or +3 throttle body, but it is up to the happy owner to continue not us. We already thank him for donating the bike for testing.
We have also made provisions for all the parts that bolt on the left side of the air box.
The ECU and the rectifier bolt directly on the left side cover using the stock bolts.
The starter solenoid is attached on the upper left side of the air box via tie raps that go thru dedicated holes.
Also we have added a very important part, a special adapter that goes on the throttle body and allows the rubber intake to adapt smoothly to the diameter of the throttle body.
This adapter has a 49mm diameter on the throttle body side and 51mm on the rubber intake side; this means that if you are using the std throttle body you have a smooth transaction, no steps. If you have a bigger throttle body then you simply modify the diameter using a lathe, from 49-51 to 50-51 or 51-51..! Without the need to grind or modify the rubber part.
The boost bottle is not used on our S3, our rubber intake has an entirely different design it is conical and has a different tuned length! And as you have seen it works fine!
Kev, be patient soon you will have one of these S3 babies to test, use for your bike and send us your opinion.

Best regards,

Dino

Dear XT660.COM forum members.

As I have promised a few months ago, the DNA Filters R&D has designed a Stage 3 Air box Kit for the very popular XT 660 X-R.

This S3 kit is finally completed tested and already our production department has produced the first batch!

The complete kit:http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...EKITLOWRES.jpg
The left side:http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...SIDELOWRES.jpg
The right side:http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...SIDELOWRES.jpg
The top side:http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...SIDELOWRES.jpg
