leaking water pump ?

hi,

just bought an 09 xt660r recently

had its first service on saturday (600miler)

since noticed that coolant is leaking ( slowdripwhen engine running ) from the water pump area - seems to be near the gasket ?

the bike hasn't been knocked or dropped - any ideas what might be the problem

thanks

In the past we have had water pipe clamps causing leaks, the crimp is not tight enough on them. Changing them to screw type usualy fixed the coolant leaks.

Your bike should have the upgraded screw type ones, run a screw driver over the clamps in that area to see if any are loose. Clean off the leaking area & start the bike to see exactly where it is leaking from.

I've got the same problem myself. The fan siezed a month ago which i had changed under warranty but now the water pump is leaking. The leak is coming from a case drain (small hole) on the bottom of the pump which means it's leaking through the seal behind the impeller. The impeller shaft is corroded so it's now a bit of a larger job.....back to the dealership. It seems to like it indoors. Not what i expected from an XT.

Sounds like a new water pump is needed.

You don't need to replace the pump, only the 2 seals, O ring & gasket.
