leaking water pump ?

hi,

just bought an 09 xt660r recently

had its first service on saturday (600miler)

since noticed that coolant is leaking ( slowdripwhen engine running ) from the water pump area - seems to be near the gasket ?

the bike hasn't been knocked or dropped - any ideas what might be the problem

thanks

In the past we have had water pipe clamps causing leaks, the crimp is not tight enough on them. Changing them to screw type usualy fixed the coolant leaks.

Your bike should have the upgraded screw type ones, run a screw driver over the clamps in that area to see if any are loose. Clean off the leaking area & start the bike to see exactly where it is leaking from.

I've got the same problem myself. The fan siezed a month ago which i had changed under warranty but now the water pump is leaking. The leak is coming from a case drain (small hole) on the bottom of the pump which means it's leaking through the seal behind the impeller. The impeller shaft is corroded so it's now a bit of a larger job.....back to the dealership. It seems to like it indoors. Not what i expected from an XT.

Sounds like a new water pump is needed.

what would a new pump be worth in $AUD? anybody know approx ?
mine is still ok but i want to carry a spare when i go for long rides.

Kev 18-05-10 05:06

You don't need to replace the pump, only the 2 seals, O ring & gasket.

mistman 18-05-10 14:35

dont you just love the help on here :D:D

Now time to eat you up i need the knowledge :tongue[1]:

Bad idea me thinks hahaha

PS-- this picture you have dispayed and the manuals you have linked to do not match up there is no part number for no.7(your image) in the service manual ?

Scratch the above i belive the part i was looking for was the oil seal

So according to you dispayed image in your post items to be repalced are -

11H-12438-10 - Mechanical Seal x 1
93101-12173 - Oil seal x 1
93210-61750 - Large O-Ring x 1
5VK-12428-00 - Gasket x 1

(part numbers taken from link Service manuals provided by Kev )

From my experience of working with mechanical seals at work, a bit of advice:

When assembling mechanical seals, do not rub the surfaces together dry, they don't like that much :021:

Also, when putting them together, put a little dabble of water on the contacting surfaces, it'll most likely run off, but it all helps assembling.

Might not be of any use to anyone, just my $2c :tazdevil:

Kev 19-05-10 12:49

That's them + a bottle of coolant & a tube of Yamaha bond sealant.

mistman 19-05-10 13:56

Thats all i needed to know haha thanks kev and the rest of you :D

cca 20-05-10 18:23

Hi Mistman,
can you post numbers on the seals? If there are any?

cca 20-05-10 21:50

...and should I drain the oil first?

mistman 21-05-10 11:27

I am not reciving the parts till tuesday so 5 day wait atm and if you are changing the oil seal aswell i think you should drain oil first .

Kev 21-05-10 13:11

No need to drain the oil when removing the water pump.

Drain the coolant from the left lower bolt on the pump with the radiator cap removed before removing the pump & you will be fine.

cca 25-05-10 12:23

Thanks Kev.

Please post the picture of mechanical seal. Here in Macedonia price for that seal is 27 euros. I believe that it can be found in some store of generic water pumps for not more than 5.

Water Pump

Just had my water pump repaired ( luckily it was a warranty job) at Bikebiz in Sydney. I noticed that the bike was leaking blue coolant after parking the bike at work the other day, so I took it through to the guys at Bikebiz, Rod (workshop manager) had a look at the leaky bit, checked on the bike details on the Yamaha Aus site and informed me that they would oreer the parts and let me know I could drop the bike off for the repair to be done.

Two weeks later (after checking the coolant levels every 3 days in the interim) I dropped her off and picked her up that afternoon, with all her leaky bits repaired. Turns out the mechanical seal was the "pig in the mosque" on this occasion!

Kev 22-12-10 11:48

Nice work mate, nice to see Yamaha Oz came throught for you.

A new expression to me - very good!

Or the Oz way, Good On You.

hugo 08-05-17 17:02

Dear all,
after a lot of reading, finally my first post. Sorry for digging up this old thread, but it has been very usefull to me as I am about to overhaul my waterpump on my xt660r. I ordered the revision set with OTR and have been told this comes without instructions. Apart from being a bit sturgly, it looks "doable" there is just one thing that feels quite important... The yamabond sealant. As indicate on one of the pictures in this thread, there is a necesiti of using a yamabond sealant. This has had me looking all over the internet... But I am still missing which yamabond. Or am just complicating things? So simple question, which yamabond sealant has to be used when overhauling the waterpump? Thank you, hugo
