Adjusting the chain.......
Picking up on something I saw in:
http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=9358 I looked at the service manual for adjusting the chain, it says the bike should be on its wheels with no weight on the bike. The handbook that comes with the bike says the bike should be on its sidestand...... The service manual for the XTX/R is similar to the Tenere service manual. So is the Handbook talking ******? With my bike on a rear paddock stand (so same as it being both wheels on the ground) my chain has about 20-30mm movement, so way too tight compared to the specs in the service manual. So, whats the concensus? Nick. |

No matter how you measure it what you want to achieve is that through the suspension travel the chain does not get tight. The most common cause for chair wear is a tight chain.
So the way I do this is to sit on the bike and feel how much slack I have. So long as I can feel enough movement to just not touch the bottom of the swingarm then that's what I want. A slightly loose chain is better that a chain to tight. |

I've always held the bike up, just sitting on it's wheels under it's own weight - give the chain 50mm (2") of free play (on the Ten it easily touches the bottom chain runner on the swing arm).
It's a bit of horses for courses, if you have a soft rear shock, and are riding hard on rought ground then a bit more slack is needed. If you'r shock is pre-loaded up and your a motorway commuter, then a bit tighter. I tend to keep the TTR (Green Lane bike) to about 60mm of play, a bit more than the manual advises, but there is a decent chain guide at the rear end so thats OK. Maybe worth looking to see if the TTR Chain Guide will fit the Ten, most of the other stuff at the rear end is the same......
